Q. Why is your book timely-- what makes it important right now?

A. There's been a flurry of startup activity made possible by the lowered barriers to entry of cloud computing, social media, and app platforms. But there's less accountability. If you look at the numbers, it's a bloodbath: you're almost certain to fail. One reason for this is that founders are delusional. But data doesn't lie, and the right data in the right place at the right time can change your business (to steal from Steward Brand.) That's what this book is about-- using data to build a better business faster.

Q. What information do you hope that readers of your book will walk away with?

A. We have a ton of concrete data-- ideas of what's normal; what metric to watch at what time; and so on. But more than any of this, we hope they'll come away with an experimental eye, realizing that they're not building a product. Instead, they're building a tool to figure out what product to build.

Q. What's the most exciting and/ or important thing happening in your space?

A. That nearly every mature industry is ripe for disruption. An entrepreneur, working within a host organization, can absolutely revitalize the business (as Procter & Gamble did when it introduced Swiffer, for example.) And a small business can tackle giants or entrenched competitors by being more agile (as Uber did to taxis, or Airbnb did to hotels.) Mops, taxis, and rentals aren't new. But they're hugely susceptible to change if it's applied in a measured, careful way.

I have encountered many GREAT new ideas throughout my career in Technology & Retail that never transitioned to reality, not because of lack of passion, but due to stunted entrepreneurial capability in the captain of the ship. LEAN ANALYTICS Use Data to Build a Better Startup Faster will enable the New to Entrepreneurial-ship, formally educated or not. If you are embarking or are already deep into a Start-Up adVenture, Alistair Croll & Benjamin Yoskovitz share with you what you to incorporate to be successful at reaching that end objective and do it faster, better and in the longer-term cheaper.

Relevant evidence will help build confidence into the Start-Up enterprise; it will assist in validating what you already know, set direction and re-direction when it is needed - it will also help build the confidence of others in you & your Start-up to succeed. Understanding the value of establishing perception in others that will prove to be gateways to your Start-Up's success is a key element within the concepts shared and done in such a way that makes sense to the lay-person; you will not find a similar approach to this message in any of your typical analytics, statistics, performance management or six sigma book.

There appears to be a magical-season for Start-Ups between bootstrapping and initial investment that will make or break the potential for that GREAT new idea to move through infancy; many all-out ignore data to assist in decision making and other become petrified by a drive for data perfection before setting direction. There are real risks to over/under complication; following the step laid out in this book will set you up to have a practical evolution in your relationship with measurable evidence.

The only suggestion that I have (& the reason for 4 versus 5 stars) and that I will be doing for the Start-Ups that I work with is to have a summary map of the book that allows the reader to check-mark what they have already accomplished and move forward to that that section of the book that aligns to where they are in their evolution of their business. This recommendation speaks to the diversity of Start-Up businesses & their entrepreneurial capability that I believe this book was written for; the book is comprehensive in content for the audience, but usability for a population that wants to move fast may not get anchored in Chapter 1 and it would be a tragedy to lose the opportunity to enable the GREAT new ideas and the captains of the ships.

Startups are all about execution, and here's the science of execution

This book has several gems. Highly recommended.

Focusing on the One Metric That Matters forces you to run targeted experiments, to find the hard truths about your product, and to push things forward.

The model of startup phases was very useful. It argues that successful startups move from from empathy to stickiness to virality to revenue to scale. It gives useful criteria for determining which phase you are in, how to decide to move to the next stage, and why you should stick around in your current phase for as long as it takes.

I loved the practical advice for important metrics for each phase, what your "line in the sand" should be for the metrics, and a strategy for maintaining the metric after you've moved to the next phase.

The discussion on types of business and the applicable metrics and case studies is gold. I found the advice for internal entrepreneurs to be spot on, and a good complement to The Innovators Dilemma.

I was hoping for some practical advice on analytics packages, aggregating analytics, and presentation. There is a little bit there, on recognizing vanity metrics, and using the first- and second-order derivatives to get actionable analytics. I found it lacking on actual recommendations of software I could buy or license. However, when I went to investigate online offerings, I was able to quickly determine if a package fit my startup's phase and business type. The framework made it easier to make my own choices, and to recognize that I'm going to have to do some of the work to create analytics that apply to my projects. I imagine the different vendors will focus their pitches toward Lean Analytics readers in the future.

I expect this book will earn a place on most founder's shelves, next to the Lean Startup and others, but with a lot more bookmarks and notes in the margins.

Making data less complex and daunting

Lean Analytics is a great fit within the “Lean Startup” movement. The book provides a very comprehensive overview of the different metrics worth tracking and – most importantly – offers a clear rationale as to why certain metrics should be tracked for a specific business model at a given stage.

Before going on to explore how metrics can be applied to different business models, the book does a great job in explaining what makes a good metric:

Comparative – Being able to compare a metric to other time periods, groups of users, or competitors, helps you understand which way things are moving.

Understandable – If people can’t remember it and discuss it, it’s much harder to turn a change in the data into a change in the culture.

A ratio or a rate – Ratios or rates tend to be easier to act on, they are inherently comparative (see the first characteristic above) and they are good for comparing opposing factors.

Changes the way you behave – What will you differently based on changes in the metric?

The thing I liked most about Lean Analytics is that all of it makes perfect sense. The book provides a well thought through approach to making sense of something that can be complex and challenging at times: data.

Teleological behaviorism says to look not in the spatial recesses of the nervous system (not to the mechanism underlying the act) but in the temporal recesses of past and future overt behavior (to the pattern of which the act is a part).

But scientific usefulness is not the only reason for adopting teleological behaviorism. The final two chapters on IBM's computer, Watson (how it deviates from humanity and how it would have to be altered to make it human), and on shaping a coherent self, provide a framework for a secular morality based on teleological behaviorism.

But the “transcend” argument believes it’s low rent to tell a story, so we have flashbacks, dream sequences, and endless footnotes. We get disquisitions on the Jewish state, the lives of trees, and the fallacy of cryogenics. One senses an author who can’t quite keep his mind on his book or maybe wishes he was writing a different book. About the Author

Barely a sequel

I wanted to love this book as much as I loved it's prequel- BEAT THE REAPER. The problem is that this book was really, just barely a sequel that I'm not sure why Josh Bazell bothered. In BEAT THE REAPER, Dr. Peter Brown was living a double life- medical intern/reformed hitman- trying to hide from the mob who wanted him dead. And it was FASCINATING! A book that went a mile a minute and refused to be put down.

In WILD THING, which takes place several years down the road, it's as if Bazell said, "I have a successful character, & since he's in WITSEC I can do anything with him" which is sort of true. But not. This book isn't about a man hiding from his past. It's about a monster in a lake. Every once in a while, there is a flash of the character that was so interesting before, but it's so brief (& frankly kind of out of no where).

This could be an interesting mystery if allowed to develop on its own, but its reliance on the few characters from BEAT THE REAPER is almost a hindrance. I expected more from them than they delivered. It read more like a miniseries than a novel frankly. And the very strange inclusion of Sarah Palin as a character truly had me scratching my head.

I was so disappointed. After reading The Reaper is Coming, I could wait to read another one of Josh Baazell's novels. This one did not keep my interest at all. The plot was stupid. The Sarah Palin character was stupid.

Great Story! They should have left out the liberal rant at the end!

This Audio book is a sequel to Beat the Reaper. Also an excellent book. I loved listening to the story, but then at the end there was an obviously left biased liberal rant. I really don't care for liberal politics and it doesn't belong in a fiction book. I purchased this Audio book for entertainment and the liberal politics at the end left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Shelley Gaskin, Series Editor for the GO! Series, is a professor of business and computer technology at Pasadena City College in Pasadena, California. She holds a master's degree in business education from Northern Illinois University and a doctorate in adult and community education from Ball State University. Dr. Gaskin has 15 years of experience in the computer industry with several Fortune 500 companies and has developed and written training materials for custom systems applications in both the public and private sector. She is also the author of books on Microsoft Outlook and word processing.

Too much fluff and not enough pith

This book is currently being used as a textbook in a computer 101 class I am teaching at my local community college. This is the second time I have taught this class using this book. First, the major pros for the text: It is spiral bound so it lays flat. Chapters are in a logical order. Each MS Office application gets three chapters. Topics are presented in project format with two projects with very detailed steps - this can be a plus or a minus depending upon your point of view. There are lots of additional projects, exercises, questions, and other pedagogical features to endear it to teachers, and this book would most likely work well for the self-learner (with some caution). The publisher provides many, many resource files for the instructor and the student.

Now, for some cons.

As mentioned, each project has a great many detailed steps and lends itself well to what I call "recipe style" learning. Meaning that if you can read, you should be able to produce the desired results. However, this is the feedback I get from the majority of my students: "I am following the steps, but I don't know why I am doing them." Clearly, the concepts are being lost! No actual learning is taking place. This becomes evident if I present a short quiz on the basic concepts presented in the project. The students are getting lost because of too many detailed steps. Most of the steps say click here, pull down that, select this, and on and on. Which leads to the next major problem with this text. Most of the focus of the project steps is on the appearance of the project: pretty printing, glitz and glitter, and lots of fluff. This is not particularly surprising since Microsoft has put emphasis on those same things since about MS Office 2003. I found the chapters on Excel to be particularly bad, and to the point where I presented my own material.

Some of the problem with these projects is also the fault of the student data files for the project. Perhaps too much of the work in setting up the project is being done. If the students had to create the project from scratch, they would be more in tune with what they are trying to accomplish. In earlier courses, I created my examples that the students created from scratch, and they focused on one concept. Then I ended with a simple project that tied the concepts together.

Finally, a few words to the self-learner: The good news is that you will not need an instructor to use this book. The steps are reasonably clear with only minor differences between the book and the actual Office application being used. The bad news is that you will need to study the project carefully in order to pull out the actual concepts that are going to be important to remember in order to use MS Office applications with any degree of expertise. My best advice is to go slowly, practice - practice - practice, and keep a notebook handy for keeping track of major concepts learned.

Continues to remain a classic

As soon as the first edition of this book was first released in the mid-eighties, it instantly became a classic. To the dedicated student, it offered a quick way of getting to the heart of an otherwise arcane subject--the finite element method. It allowed such a student to learn on their own, how to reach a high level of expertise, where they could not just use finite element programs, but more, much more, program their own constitutive models and use them in their own finite element programs. The "building block" approach pioneered here was useful when it was first released, and continues to be useful to me now, almost 30 years later! What's more, the present edition, the fifth, is much improved over the earlier ones, retaining the same unpretentious style as the original, but with many more examples, including the good old chestnuts included in the first edition. The source code and instructions on how to use it are freely and easily available on the internet. Kudos to all those involved with this book!

Great book for fully understanding FEM

Excellent book on programming FEM with Fortran. All the theory is there and nicely explained. I do not recommend this book to people who are just starting to learn programming or FEM as many of the basic ideas behind FEM (strong/weak formulation) are skipped thorough or not mentioned. This said, if you already know the basic theory then this book is great. The algorithms used are fast and effective, lots of advanced methods and elements are explained (non-linier analysis, eigenvalue problems, dynamics).
All in all, a great book.

Another True Glimpse at Victorian Times

In "The Nether World," Gissing gives you another one of his hard, realistic looks at life in London in Victorian times. This time he focuses on the poorest of the poor in the Clerkenwell area of London. These are people whom England's infantile labor laws generally can't help. If/When they can find work, they often work 16 hours per day all week, and the wages they earn hardly cover rent for a very small room in disreputable housing. It's a world where unwanted children multiply like rabbits, and the death of any family member is usually seen as a relief of one less mouth to feed.
For all these reasons, this world - this nether world - is a world about which the upper and middle classes are happily ignorant. Those born into these lowest levels of humanity often rail about the injustice of being born into such circumstances. However, their cries for social reform, their desperate attempts to better themselves, and their pitiful needs for simple pennies are never really heard or understood by those more comfortably off.
Within this novel, then, Gissing explores the lives of a range of characters as they deal with being born in the nether world. While he focuses on the heart-warming characters of Jane Snowdon and Sidney Kirkwood, Gissing competently develops the storyline of a large number of other Clerkenwell characters whose lives intertwine with Jane's and Sidney's. In his distinct manner, Gissing is mercilessly honest and yet generally compassionate with the characters whose lives he examines. Thus, he offers a glimpse of the slums - full of love, ambition, corruption, greed, and despair - in a manner that many of us would never know otherwise.
Many compare or try to compare this kind of honest look at the rougher side of London with Dickens. However, it is important to note that Dickens tended to idealize poverty and always brought things to a hopeful, positive ending. Gissing does no such thing. Though an educated man, Gissing himself suffered cruelly from poverty and mixed with these classes as he struggled to support himself as an author (see "New Grub Street"). Thus, he has no idealist views of poverty and simplistic lives.
Additionally, Gissing has a penchant for realistic storylines. It is unnerving to read his books, actually, because you can't rest on the fact that he will work everything out nicely in the end. In fact, he usually doesn't. He is courageous enough to write true-to-life outcomes to very frustrating, dispiriting circumstances. It is probably why he never became a popular author as readers often want happy endings - with a Ghost of Christmas Past if necessary - in order to relieve their consciences.
All in all, another great work by Gissing. He does get a bit preachy (even as he reveals the preachiness of others as futile), but that is easily overlooked. The accurate historical glimpse of London that he gives is invaluable. And I imagine that his brutally honest portrayal of life might speak to the impoverished among us today

Don't buy this edition

I'm not commenting on the novel itself here (although it is an interesting, if problematic, look at London's underworld), but I do want to warn readers against buying this Echo Library edition. There is no contextual material (no intro, afterword, or notes), which would have been useful, but more annoying is the fact that the copy editor for this press appears to have been asleep while editing this edition. There are three or four major typos on every page (glaring typos-- periods in the middle of words, apostrophes instead of commas, mispelled words). Sometimes there are even words missing, which makes the prose difficult to follow. This novel is worth reading, but try to find a different edition.

A noble heart sheltered by ignorance

Gissing's novel about working class life, bleak and angry, published in 1889, shares a main plot element with Dickens' Great Expectations: an expected inheritance, here from a returner from down-under. There was a trend in Victorian fiction to write about the `condition of England'. Gissing was one of the bleakest contributors: he offered no optimism, no way out, no reason for optimism. His endings were of the kind that we saw recently in the movie Winter's Bone: deceptive little meaningless pseudo triumphs, not more than moments of rest. People don't rise from the nether world. Upper and nether worlds don't have any permeable interfaces.

Central hero of this decently depressing master piece is a qualified worker in the jewelry industry, with some lost illusions about talent in art and with a failed young love.
While still a young man, `he reached the stage of confident and aspiring radicalism, believing in the perfectibility of man, in human brotherhood, in anything you like that is the outcome of a noble heart sheltered by ignorance'. That stage was gone now, `to give place to nothing very satisfactory'. The man tries to stay decent, to have friendships, to help people worse off than he is himself...

Gissing's Pip-equivalent is young Jane, the grandchild of the old man who came back from Ossiland and who is expected to leave something to her. At the outset of the novel she is 13 and she is for all practical purposes a domestic slave in a boarding house, mistreated by a sadistic tyrant of a teenage daughter of the owner.
We get to meet rather many un-nice people down here in the nether world. Poverty is not conducive to social graces, and decency is challenged hard under miserable conditions.
Gissing was not much of a sympathizer with the 'low classes', nor was he a 'radical', nor was he a modernizer of literature. What he brought to his subject here is detailed knowledge based on own experience as well as on meticulous research. The Oxford World Classics edition that I have gives us excerpts from Gissing's note books in the appendix, where he wrote down the facts of life for use in the book.
