Good, but far from I'm the best of the Once Upon a Time Travel books

This story is a cute and quick spin on the Nutcracker. I did enjoy it, but I would be lying if I said that it wasn't a tiny bit disappointing. I get that it's a short story, but it was just a bit too short for my liking. Everything about this story had me wanting more; more character development of Max, more details of his home, more of he and Clara's blooming romance...more everything! Yet sadly, it came up a bit lacking. I really don't think it should have been done as a short story, but rather a full length installment of the Once Upon a Time Travel series. Also, the fact that the romance in this story is basically rated PG, was both surprising and a bit disappointing. One of the things I've always adored about this series, was the odd (but awesome) coupling of graphic sex scenes mixed in with the cute whimsy of the fairytale settings. Jill Miles always made it work and work well at that. This story however, kind of felt like going out to Chinese dinner, but not getting your fortune cookie at the end. All in all though, it was cute and entertaining...it was just missing that extra bit of depth and detail that made the other books so great.

Sugar and spice!

After watching the Nutcracker ballet with my sister and her daugther and then seeing this at Amazon.de I simply had to have this book and it transported me right back into the wonderful story. I adore Muffin, she is one of my favorite fairy godmothers of all time and she is at her witty punny bright and merry best in this novella. The heroine is quite bewildered to find herself in a story she doesn't know anything about but her nutcracker helps her through and I totally fell for him doing that. It is a sugary sweet, christmassy nice story full of laughter and romantic but suspense and thrill too and it transfers the ballet story perfectly in a fantasy novella that keeps you reading right up to the grande finale. Thanks, Jill Myles, for this perfect read for the season (but I am sure it can be enjoyed throughout the year!).

A pleasant, deep, thorough review of a beautiful science

Bouton's "Learning and Behavior" provides one of the best current introductions to the science of animal learning. This book might feel "hard to digest" at first due to the great amount of literature reviewed in it, as well as because of the many connections the author makes among different findings and theories (in my opinion, these are feats, rather than flaws). Don't desist... keep reading it! The beauty of this journey lies in its many different paths. If you view psychology as a scientific endeavor, you will enjoy the openness of this book to different interpretations, rebuttals, refutations, and alternative accounts. A patient, persistent reader won't be disappointed with this book, and will reach the end of the last chapter with the irreplaceable satisfaction of realizing that much has already been done in the science of associative learning, but there's still plenty of room for further research too.

Love Story for (lez) Breeders and Grievers

This soap opera follows two hot doctors who fall in love amidst life in a busy ER.

Quinn Maguire is the sexy black-haired, blue-eyed butch and ER newcomer. Despite being a mere 28, she's a rising-star surgeon who somehow *ends up* in the ER.

Honor Blake (early 30s?) is Quinn's ER boss, a beautiful brown-haired femme with a sharp mind, uncanny medical instincts, and a wedding ring on her finger. She suspects a catch like Quinn in the ER trenches is probably based on some kind of misconduct and doesn't exactly welcome her with open arms.

This lays the groundwork for some resistance, despite the attraction between these two. Needlesstosay, there is plenty of sexual tension.

The power play is minimal so if you're entertaining fantasies about having a hot boss who lusts for you but shows it by being mean to you (heh heh)... well, Radclyffe doesn't quite run with that one as much as she could have. These characters are just too nice to go there. But the idea is still there, somewhat.

This also isn't a story about a cheating spouse, so don't be put off by the wedding ring.

This is a very sappy love story. But hey, sappy can be pretty juicy to indulge in if it's well-done and you're in the mood... and this one will keep you turning pages. It is about loss, grieving, and living with all the uncertainties of life. But it's also a story about family and friendships and renewal. These two characters both come to the table with issues of the heart and they both seem to hold what the other needs to heal. In this way, they seem made for each other at this particular point in time.

It is a very well-written story on the whole. Despite sappy and a bit over the top with family values and how to talk to/treat your kid and such, Radclyffe knows how to bring her characters to life and make you care for them. Her magic is in the details and how these everyday encounters can be so full of emotion and characterization.

What's more, Radclyffe's background as a surgeon allows her to create a very realistic medical setting and all the drama is consequently plausible and interesting.

Negatives? Well I've read she does like a certain kind of formula in her work. I don't think Radclyffe ever writes depressing endings or permits them much at Bold Strokes Books (where she is the prez). But then who needs those? We have plenty in our literary history and it's refreshing to have so many options for positive characters and endings. I can definitely see some common characters/storyline threads already in what I've read from her, but so far I don't mind. I mean, I watched the series House for years before it got tired... and that show is formula galore. But the writing and characters were just too awesome and we just love that formula and are addicted to that formula, so who cares. It's kinda like that. KINDA. I can't say Radclyffe gets it right every time... but she sure hit the spot with this one.

However, I wonder if all of her stories favor making her butch the most appealing and sexy character. I would have liked to see more descriptions of Honor Blake that highlighted her femininity. I did enjoy seeing the contrasts in the way Quinn and Honor were created though. Quinn is butch, athletic, and great with her hands, but Honor maintained quite a bit of dominance between them. Quinn was just a little too nice for me... it would have been more intriguing to see her more aggressive in some scenes. I think the author actually tried, but she just came off as passive.

Radclyffe does have a very sexy imagination. She adds a very generous dose of sexual tension and actual sex... it's a nice balance to sappy, sappy, and more sappy, lol.

But sometimes her sexual descriptions are a tad vague and I had to reread to visualize something... and not just in this book. And I just don't know about the thigh sex, lol... I don't think this position plays out as well in books as it does in person... when you're like 13 and puberty is in full swing and you're aroused by anything, lol. Hmm... at some point, I, for one, would like her to drop in a few strap on play dynamics to change things up a bit.

I also have to say a few synonyms for *husky* (as in husky voice, which these characters constantly have) would do wonders in seducing my ears... Radclyffe does seem to have some favorite vocabulary here... same holds true for fist, jolt, quizzically... but then I'm just one of those close readers who stops to notice and appreciate word choice.

I think Radclyffe could have done a better job with both Mandy and Phyllis. Sometimes her secondary characters seem present for one superficial purpose and don't get the complexity and originality they deserve from a writer like Radclyffe (just noticed the same thing for Mae in Innocent Hearts). Mandy was just ridiculous and embarrassing and I sorta questioned Radclyffe's ability to develop really femmy characters who don't turn out to be caricatures or drag-like. And she could have done better at the more toned-down femmes... like Honor, who is clearly NOT butch but was almost always dressed in t-shirts, polos, and cargo shorts. I saw her as much more womanly, feminine, and classy for that attire (hey, she is the boss!)... and someone like Quinn is going to like those more feminine things. I guess some romance writers seem to write best in what gender they identify or idealize of themselves (hence the hot butches you love in her stories).

And if I were really going to get critical, I'd pick at the writer`s choice to develop such ethics in these people when it comes to family and friends... but they all sure cross lines professionally, lol.. Vice-principal Phyillis and the Art teacher, Mandy's creepy flirtations with clients at work, and of course our hot boss, Honor, and her thing for a subordinate doc.

But I guess that's lez romance or light reading for you. I know you just have to suspend your disbelief when you are reading formulaic lesbian romances... so mostly these criticisms don't matter much and basically I just enjoyed the ride. I just have an over-analytical mind and notice these things even if I really enjoyed a book. I just put them aside.

It`s definitely a top-notch read in the world of lez fiction. It's probably a 4 star book if you dwell on the flaws... but since I really came to love these main characters overall and because it's one of the only books I happened to read while abroad (somehow everything seems better and more vivid when you're reading English in a foreign country and your mind is quiet), I just had fun with it and it's an easy 5 on my scale for fun reading.

I am just beginning to explore this author, but it's clear from what I've read so far and seen in other reviews that this writer is a star in the lez romance genre. Moreover, if you fall in love with her characters, she seems to like to give them cameos and bigger parts in some of her other works, so that seems to be a nice treat.

I'm looking forward to reading more of Radclyffe and revisiting Quinn and Blake in Night Call and Saxon Sinclair in Passion's Bright Fury.

An excellent book with depth and passion, 3-1/2 stars

You know what you are getting with Radclyffe: a well-written, well-edited, multi-dimensional romance with characters dealing with disappointments or painful pasts, leading to an ultimately happy ending. This is a tried and true formula, and curling up with one of these books is a delight.

As far as specifics regarding this novel, I love it when Radclyffe uses a medical setting, because she's able to so deftly make it a realistic and interesting world. Quinn was an intriguing character with a bit of a mystery surrounding her undisclosed health reasons for leaving her surgical career. Honor was a sympathetic character in trying to deal with her grief, and balance a family and professional life. Chemistry sparked, but even beyond that the gentle way Quinn pursued inserting herself into Honor's life, her delight with Arly (Honor's daughter), the way she just couldn't help but pursue this woman despite the fact that she clearly had issues, all these elements combined to create a rich narrative.

This book sets itself apart with the realistic or unflinching way it deals with falling in love again after having lost a previous partner. The pacing lags a touch as the characters sometimes seem to be endlessly retreading the same ground on issues. But I appreciate the weight that this author gives to serious themes, versus just glossing over them like a less-experienced author might in order to get to the "real" story, while ending up missing the real story.

The themes of moving on after great loss are represented in a variety of ways, through both Honor's grief and Quinn's coping with finding new ways to embrace happiness apart from the career she'd dreamed of having. This whole set-up was rife with believable road-blocks to happiness for our protagonists, ones it was fulfilling to follow them in overcoming. We also get a delightful little interlude in the end with Sax Sinclair and Jude from "Passion's Bright Fury" as a bonus.

A very good read, as was expected, and a book I'll be keeping in my collection.

Radclyffe is flawless in her writing style. I preferred this one over "passion's bright fury" because the author delve deeper into the heart of matters in lieu of the medicine -- less about all of the patients and medical terms and more about the slow, lasting development of love to replace long-held pain & sorrow. I appreciated the pleasant surprise by Radclyffe: adding her other beloved main characters to this one by the book's end -- smart choice. overall: passion, redemption, love, family and released pain flood as themes of this really terrific book. highly recommend

Best book I've come across so far for LED lights, and hydro/aqua/aeroponic growing

I bought this book specifically to better understand LED grow lights and its well worth every penny. I've read a couple of truly mediocre books on hydroponics so far and for the low price of this book, I was skeptical at first. I'm happy to say that I found this book truly useful. I know know what to look for when purchasing and LED grow light. The author goes over the specific color frequencies, and ratios of those color frequencies needed to make a good grow light. The author is up-front in saying that more data is needed before anyone can claim to make the perfect grow light, but the biology of most plants require some fairly basic combinations of colors/frequencies.
Aside from the insight gained on LED lights specifically, I also learned a lot about planning my grow room, including how to ensure that my equipment does not strain my existing circuitry, light control, etc. As a novice to hydro/aeroponics, I found this book to have tremendous value. I'll keep it on my digital bookshelf for many months to come. As it turns out, the first grow light I purchased on Amazon was well within the suggested lighting values recommended by this book. Dumb luck on my part, but good to know in hindsight that I made a lucky guess. Since then I have purchased that same grow light, plus a different one that incorporated UV and IR spectrums. If you are looking for usable advice for growing plants with LED lights, this is the book to get.

Good information on a relatively new lighting system.

Although he avoids mentioning it nearly entirely, this is about growing cannabis under LED lights. Not to worry, it still counts for food crops. Just ignore all the references to weird grow media and nutrient solutions and his advice will help with your tomatoes and such.

.I don't know when Mr Sloper wrote this - as opposed to when it was published - but good quality LEDs with 8-9 frequencies at 600w (but drawing about 300w) - use 3w not 5w bulb systems - are now available in the $150-200 range online. This really makes LEDs practical for small gardens.

Well worth reading, especially since there are so many misconceptions about this option.

About the Author

Jim Collins is author or coauthor of six books that have sold in total more than ten million copies worldwide, including the bestsellers Good to Great, Built to Last, and How the Mighty Fall. Jim began his research and teaching career on the faculty at Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he received the Distinguished Teaching Award in 1992. He now operates a management laboratory in Boulder, Colorado, where he conducts research, teaches, and consults with executives from the corporate and social sectors.

Neither good nor great

Let me preface this review by saying that I am a fan of Collins' earlier work. Built to Last was a great book, and Good to Great was very good. How the Mighty Fall, however, is neither. The issue of corporate failure is critical, particularly in the current downturn. Unfortunately, the core of Collins' analysis in this book is flawed.

How the Mighty Fall addresses two related questions: Why do good companies fail? and how does management respond once a company gets into trouble? Collins introduces a five stage model to answer these questions, where steps one and two address the roots of corporate failure and steps three through five managements' response.

Collins' analysis of management response to decline--denial of risk, grasping for salvation, and capitulation to irrelevance or death--accurately describe how leaders respond to deterioration in their business. This analysis here is solid, the writing clear, and the tempo brisk. Collins does a particularly good job of describing dysfunctional leadership behaviors of companies is in decline.

Collins' analysis of why companies get into trouble in the first place is much less compelling. Companies fail, according to Collins, when success breeds managerial hubris, which leads to overreach and ultimately failure. Like many of Collins' findings, this makes intuitive sense. Unfortunately in this case, his core argument runs counter to research on hundreds of companies, conducted over decades by dozens of scholars. There are two major flaws in Collins argument.

First, he claims that companies get into trouble because they overreach and expand beyond their core. This is consistent with data showing that diversified companies trade at a discount to focused rivals. Recent research published in the Journal of Financial Economics and the Journal of Finance has established that the companies often diversify to escape decline in their core business. Overreach is a symptom--not a cause--of decline and thus cannot explain its roots.

Second, Collins ignores a rich body of research that finds decline sets in not because companies stray from their core, but because they stick too close to it. Clay Christensen's research on disruptive technology, for example, demonstrates that companies stumble when they stay too close to their established customers and fail to serve emerging segments. The competency trap literature finds that companies get locked in by what they do well and struggle to adapt when circumstances change. Hubris and overreach, of course, play a role in corporate decline, but a well-established body of research suggests that they are rarely the root causes.

How did Collins, who does many things right in his research, get his core finding so wrong in this case? As always he tackles a big and important question, and his pairing of comparable companies is a sensible research design. His failure to read or acknowledge a rich body of previous research that bears directly on his research question, in this case, has led him to rather facile observations. In research, as in business, a lack of humility in recognizing the contributions of others can lead to overreach.

Honest Follow-up On Greatness

One thing that strikes me about Jim Collins' work is that he is passionate about what he does. He and his researchers dig down deep into companies and examine them from different perspectives over a period of time. As he says, "We do not decide which companies we 'want' to study... we lay out the criteria for the study-set selection before we see the data and systematically eliminate companies from consideration based on whether they meet the criteria." This has given him great insight into what success is, not just for corporations, but for any institution.

What comes through in his recent book, along with passionate study, is honesty. Collins previously chose Fannie Mae as a "Good to Great" institution. Recently, they have demonstrated anything but greatness in facing economic and marketplace changes. There are other companies he chose, like Circuit City, that have gone the same path. Collins discusses why these enterprises were chosen in his previous book and why they fell on hard times after once being great. Because a great company stumbles into mediocrity does not mean the criteria is flawed or the framework wrong. Rather, as the study shows, somewhere along the way these companies strayed away from what once made them great. "How the Mighty Fall" uses the same criteria from "Good to Great," only in reverse, to show how and why once great enterprises have fallen. Collins does this with the same attention to detail and passion as in his previous works.

There are a couple of parts that I found most interesting from the book. First is the chapter entitled "The Undisciplined Pursuit of More." The examples of Ames and Rubbermaid, along with the other ideas presented in this chapter, really hit home in light of recent developments in our financial markets. The second part is appendix 6 where he gives brief case studies on IBM, Nucor and Nordstrom using the "Good to Great" framework to demonstrate how they went from struggling companies back to greatness. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in an honest assessment of either business success or success principles in general.

I am a huge Jim Collins fan. I really believe that Good to Great helped my company in many different ways. This book had some great information in it, but it could have been done in an article in a magazine. There is just not enough substance to fill an entire book. What is there is really important, but not much of it. In fact it seems like half of the book is appendix. I guess after Good to Great I expected more.

About the Author
David Gandy is a model of Dolce&Gabbana’s men’s line. He is also a leading fashion blogger for British Vogue online and is currently exploring a second career in acting. 

Educated at Cambridge University, Peter Howarth began his career in the fashion industry working for Paul Smith and later Nicole Farhi before becoming style director for British GQ and later editor-in-chief of British Esquire. He has written for many publications, among them the New York Times’ T Magazine, the Guardian, the Financial Times, and Italy’s L’Uomo Vogue. Beautiful man, but a near prudish book

In this day and age, with the abundance of books showing the male figure, I'm surprised, and frankly disappointed, that this book contains no full frontal nudity. Early in the book Gandy compares himself to the David by Michelangelo and then you see him standing in a similar pose, with his genitalia fully blacked out. It looks ridiculous. What's the hangup? I"m not asking for pornography, but at least an honest presentation. I would prefer a fig leaf to the black void in this particular photograph.

He's a beautiful man, I like the casual writing of the book but the prudish, puritan almost, nature of the photo selection is disappointing.

The runway shots are predictable and the Klein group shots are boring. The paparazzi shots are unnecessary, why in red?

I have never paid this much for a book, but I feel it was worth the investment. The book is HUGE and the images are BEAUTIFUL. If you are a fan of David Gandy, Mariano Vivanco or just appreciate the beauty of the male form, you will enjoy this book.

I purchased this hardcover book without batting an eyelash, and I don't care how much it cost either!!! great photography and great profile !! I knew that all of this proceeds will go to his charities as he mention in one article I read. I'm a great fan of his and I even get an invite to see him walk a ramp one time when he visited manila!!! I love his blog too, very charming and witty!!

Always A Clasic Text Book

I read it( first edition) as a first year under-graduate student in the Presidency College, University of Calcutta,India, many years ago.
It was fantastic, to go through it, using mathematical approach, which makes everything so easy to understand.
It has helped me to read easily the Paul Samuelson's Foundations of Economic Analysis, which is a classic on its own.
Now, in its latest edition, it is still a classic, which I use for my undergraduate and sometime post graduate students in Japan. They love it.
If you read it as text, you can sail through any journals of economics without much difficulties.
If there is a Nobel prize for text books, Henderson & Quandt should get it.

The Henderson and Quandt book covers the basics of micro theory very well. The topics are presented in a very organized manner, which makes the book excellent for MA students. If you are looking for a good beginning instructional book as a companion for your coursework at the MA level, Henderson & Quandt is it!
