About the Author
DC Alden is a UK-based thriller writer, filmmaker and screenwriter. Born in London, DC’s career has encompassed a variety of roles, from soldier to technical consultant, including work on many popular films and TV shows. As well as writing, DC has always loved the movies. Answering a call for former soldiers, he worked for eight months on HBO’s BAND OF BROTHERS, alongside industry heavyweights such as Stephen Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Damien Lewis, Michael Fassbender and Tom Hardy. The experience reignited his lifelong passion for film and screenwriting, and a few months later he was enrolled at a London film school, making several short films and a documentary about life on set (BAND OF BROTHERS – AN EXTRA’S LIFE), using previously unseen footage. DC has also written, produced and directed live action trailers for his forthcoming thrillers THE ANGOLA DECEPTION and FORTRESS, and continues to work on various writing and film projects. On Writing His first novel INVASION was an idea conceived whilst undertaking research for a short film script. A military thriller, set in a world of failing western economies threatened by a united Islamic super-state, INVASION sold out its entire print run in three months and continues to garner strong reviews on Amazon. If you love La Carre buy this now.

As a fan of John La Carre to say that DC Alden's work is comparable is high praise indeed. The book had me nervous at times as the 'main' character looked to be entering a cul de sac, a no win situation. Without giving too much of the plot away Alden has given a hypothetical theory flesh and blood.

Great book by DC Alden. This one I couldn't put down. Not normally a fan of conspiracy theories but this one was well developed and plausible. Fun to read, follows along very well and has good subplots. Really enjoyed this and look forward to more.

Neglected gem of Fichte's popular works

This is a review of the importance of this work by Fichte, not the translation, which is more or less accurate to Fichte's German.

The Characteristics of the Present Age belongs with Fichte's popular works, for they were given publically and were intended to work out the implications of his transcendental idealism for practical matters such as history and politics. In this, these lectures serve an analogous function to Hegel's own lectures on the philosophy of history (given as college lectures and not public talks per se), though Fichte's lectures have never served as popular introductions to his speculative philosophy, as Hegel's lectures on the philosophy of history did for his thought. Indeed, Fichte's Characteristics of the Present Age have suffered from benign neglect in the non-German speaking world; while the various editions of the difficult and even byzantine Wissenschaftslehre are studied regularly, Characteristics is relegated to obscurity as an idiosyncratic statement on historical necessity by a philosopher about to be eclipsed by younger, more radical thinkers such as Hegel. Collingwood (1994:108) sums up much of the scholarship dealing with Fichte's philosophy of history: "The chief difficulty which a reader finds in dealing with Fichte's view of history is the difficulty of being patient with what appears so silly," though he does not think that this verdict is completely warranted, and for good reason. For just as Fichte's Wissenschaftslehre is widely recognized as the most important link in the development of idealism from Kant to Hegel, so is Characteristics the single most important link between Herder's romantic appropriation of the philosophy of history from Voltaire, and the full flowering of philosophy of history in Hegel. Herder provided the impetus for looking at historical ages as actual histories which had value in and of themselves; Fichte is able to take these histories, more specifically the history of his own time, and infuse them with a universal philosophy which, though Herder had warned against such all-encompassing systems of thought, was able to perfectly catch the Zeitgeist of the emerging nineteenth century political and philosophical ferment. Though it remained for Hegel to make the philosophical understanding of history truly philosophical in a way that his contemporaries would embrace, Fichte is the first important post-Kantian philosopher to offer a comprehensive system of history and philosophy which attempts to come to terms with both actual history, and universal philosophical claims.

Of all the American divisions in World War I, the 4th Brigade of Marines, Second Division (Regular Army), A.E.F., suffered the most casualties, captured the second most territory, captured the most enemy prisoners and equipment, and won the most decorations for valor. Louis Linn, a young Marine in this illustrious division, carried a sketchbook and pencil stub, drawing whenever he could to maintain his sanity in the madness of war. Several years after the Armistice, he used these sketches to write the stories of events that haunted him, that gave him nightmares, that kept him awake at night. Never before published, Linn's memoir recalls his training in Norfolk and Quantico, life in the trenches at Verdun, fighting at the Battle of Belleau Wood, his wounding at Soissons and again at St. Mihiel, and his subsequent hospitalization. Throughout, his sketches and woodcuts portray the action, providing a vivid account of the war from the trenches.

Linn's service chronology

(From USMC muster rolls and AEF casualty rolls) Linn enlisted in the USMC on June 8, 1917. He joined the 77th MG Co, 6th MG Bn after recruit training. Linn was assigned as a company messman June 1-30, 1918. He was WIA July 19 by a gun shot wound to his right chest at Soissons and rejoined the 77th MG Company on Aug 27. At St Mihiel he was either slightly wounded by a concealed grenade (muster roll) or received a gun shot wound in his right arm and/or right thigh (conflicting entries in the casualty roll) and was in a series of field hospitals, ending up in Orleans in Dec 1918. He was in the St Aignan Casual Company Feb 1-28, 1919. He joined the 203rd Casual Company at Quantico, VA on March 8, 1919. He was promoted to Cpl in May 1919.

A Great First Hand Account

A great first hand account by a twice wounded Marine enlisted man who was there. He doesn't pull any punches and tells it like it was even at his own expense. Linn comments on the endless mud and marches and the horrors of war. Along with the horrors there are also moments of humor and light heartedness. For some reason he has chosen to slightly alter all the names in his narration but these have been corrected for us along with notes putting the chapters into historical and geographical persective by B.J. Omanson. This book is an easy read and hard to put down. A good investment for those interested in WWI Marine Corps History.

Professor Stein's final book is a tour de force

Functional analysis is the fourth and final book in Elias Stein's and Rami Shakarchi'sPrinceton lectures in analysis. Elias Stein is a world authority on harmonic analysis and it is not surprising therefore that the first book in the series was on Fourier analysis. The second and third books covered complex and real analysis. He is also a winner of the prestigious Wolf Prize which is granted, at least in part, for excellence in communication of mathematical ideas: "For his contributions to classical and Euclidean Fourier analysis and for his exceptional impact on a new generation of analysts through his eloquent teaching and writing."

These books were based on lectures given at Princeton and therefore reflect the standard of mathematics teaching at Princeton, but more importantly they reflect what Stein wanted to do by bringing together a life time of knowledge and insights concerning Fourier theory. My understanding (which comes from someone within the functional analysis "mafia") is that Professor Stein really wanted to set a benchmark for doing Fourier series and functional analysis properly and that has informed the way he has approached these four books. The synthesis of ideas is excellent and even though I learned Fourier theory from a very able man, I was always hankering for the bigger deal - the broader connections. At the top level of mathematics the "helicopter" view is actually the hardest thing to do - just think of Littlewood's three principles: (a) every measurable set is nearly a finite sum of intervals; (b) every absolutely integrable function is nearly continuous; and (c) every pointwise convergent sequence of functions is nearly uniformly convergent. These three simple principles are but the tip of a massive analytical iceberg.

It is clear that there is a real passion for Fourier series and its tantalising applications which are extraordinarily diverse. When Fourier initially developed the seemingly outrageous theory in the early part of the 19th century, little did he know the astonishing applications that his theory would have. The sheer generality of Fourier series has in turn generated extremely subtle issues which have exercised the minds of some great mathematicians over the years. You cannot properly understand Fourier theory until you really appreciate the subtlety of the convergence issues that it poses. Stein's series of books are all about really deeply understanding why the theory works as well as it does.

Because these books are written for a mathematically sophisticated undergraduate audience they are in my view not really suitable for a struggling student. They are not suitable for an electrical engineering student, say, who just wants to know how to bang out Fourier or Laplace transforms. This is not the audience for these books. They are in fact like a complex French meal that requires a suitably chosen white or red wine to complement the overall meal. Indeed, I sometimes take one of the four volumes down to Bondi Beach to watch the waves and reflect on the depth of the material which is reinforced by the numerous exercises and problems. The exposition is very clear and the proofs are easy to follow (assuming the reader has the requisite background knowledge). There is an enormous amount of material in the exercise and problems which really amplify and reinforce the material in the text. There are some quite difficult problems but there are many hints which take you sequentially through the solution and in my experience these hints do indeed lead you systematically to the full solution. That is not to say that you don't have to do a lot of work to get there. In fact I have published detailed solutions to some of his exercises and problems.

The volume on functional analysis is actually quite different to other "classical texts" dealing with functional analysis. For instance Rudin's textbook on functional analysis has quite a different emphasis to Stein's introduction to the subject. Stein devotes a whole chapter to applications of the Baire category theory while Rudin devotes a page. Stein does this because it provides some insights into establishing the existence of a continuous but nowhere differentiable function as well as the existence of a continuous function with Fourier series diverging a point. Thus what he is doing is providing a much more holistic and integrated approach to the subject than occurs in other approaches which are much more narrowly focused. In terms of overall feel I think he is closest in philosophical approach to Frigyes Riesz whose book "Functional Analysis" (with Bela Sz.-Nagy) is so different to the more modern books. Stein covers the applications of functional analysis to probability theory and the vehicle he uses is Rademacher functions which enables a quick derivation of the square root law for sums of Bernoulli trials. This leads into a chapter on Brownian motion which starts with a quotation from Joe Doob which says in part that "Norbert Wiener..was so unfamiliar with the standard probability techniques even at elementary levels that his methods were so clumsily indirect that some of his own doctoral students did not realize that his Brownian motion process had independent increments". Those of us who have attempted hacking through Doob's impenetrable books will appreciate the irony in this quotation. Having said that Stein's approach to the construction of Brownian motion is different to the approaches taken by the finance world writers. He develops Brownian motion in the context of solving Dirichlet's problem generally. This is what you would expect from an expert in harmonic analysis. There is a very useful chapter oscillatory integrals in Fourier analysis which develops the theory behind averaging operators and curvature.

The book also contains all the other "usual suspects" of functional analysis - Banach spaces, LP spaces, Hardy spaces and so on.

Because this is the last book in the series it is worth going back on reviewing the scope of what has been achieved. When you do this, you appreciate what a superb job has been done in bringing the whole sprawling area together. A lifetime of work has been reflected in these books and any student who can do every single problem and exercise would indeed be destined for great things.

My kid loves the Stein-Shakarchi series. He used two of their books for undergrad course work and the third as a supplement to Folland for his grad analysis course. So this last book made a perfect Xmas gift !

The definitive Hoshin Kanri book

I've spent some time looking at several different Hoshin Kanri (hoshin - navigation or compass, kanri - control) texts, a.k.a "Policy Deployment." I personally think that this is overall the best one, hand's down. It's a tricky subject, with many "moving parts" and few examples available to view firsthand (I've seen it only a few times myself). I mention other books, but have not reviewed them, because they were so bad I couldn't even finish them and I have a rule to not review any book I haven't read.

This review compares this to several other ones (as best I could), plus for consistency of philosophy with other lean/operational excellence concepts. Most lean texts I've read barely mention Hoshin, if at all. Even when they do, then do so poorly or with too little detail to help you other than to make you aware that it exists.

This book helps fill a huge gaping void in the understanding and implementation of the lean enterprise.

Pro:
+A clear linkage to Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycles at different levels... at last! Cascading PDCA is critical to success.
+Excellent examples of the x-matrix and various styles of A3 report
+A Shingo Prize winning text, and it has definitely earned this honor!
+Goes well above expectation, digging deeper into "DNA" teaming elements/systems that creates deeper understanding of "why" we do hoshin, not just "how"
+Sets clear roles for who should do what, when, and of course why and how
+Superb examples of A3 reports of all different sorts
+Generally well written and interesting despite a potentially dry subject... other books I have on this topic are boring and a fight to read, this was not in the least!

Con:
-Some situtations where I think concepts were compromised or are incorrect, examples: management by walking around (flawed) instead of leader standard work (preferred), and the 7 wastes instead of the more contemporary 8 wastes, plus others not mentioned here.
-Measures do not emphasize a "from X to Y by Z" format, which is a weakness of many x-matrices, especially at the site or departmental level. If you don't know where you are, how can you set a target and follow-up to see how well you are closing the gap? Goals like "reduce scrap 50%" are bogus and against best practices of Hoshin! Better to say, "Scrap from 102 to 51 pieces per day by 10/1" to convey a sense of expectation and quick understanding of where you are.
-Version of the x-matrix touted is very busy and overly complicated with various shapes, violating quick dissemination of information. Suggest the version described in, "The Management Compass" by Michele L. Bechtell.
-Many little errors in formatting, spelling, and even a few where it says see Figure "X" but really meant see Figure "Y"... although you can work around these well enough, it could cast doubts on other material herein (but don't let it be a turn off as the material is wonderful and so well written/presented). Example: The "Engineering" process and "Order Entry" process flows found in Figure 2-4 on page 32 are flipped over - totally backwards! Also, the ORder Entry process is really the Bid process... it appears mislabeled. The flows are presented correctly on page 33 (figures 2-5 and 2-6).

Bottom line: highly recommended. One of the few texts that the lean zealot simply must possess; THE book for Hoshin Kanri. Comes as close to getting a 5/5 stars as one could possibly get and not actually get there. Goes above and beyond what I expected and for difficult subject matter. Other books have some good points (see cons section) however, few, if any, other books that I am aware has the overall scope and content, plus a fantastic execution that makes reading it so enjoyable.

It is the first academic book to present analysis of Harvey’s music videos and opens up fresh avenues into exploring what is at stake in the video work of one of Britain’s premier singer-songwriters. It extends the discussion on music video to consider how to make sense of the rapidly developing digital environment in which it now sits. The interdisciplinary nature of the book should attract readers from a range of subject areas including popular music studies, cultural studies, media and communication studies, and gender studies.

In 2005, when Lawrence Summers, then president of Harvard, asked why so few women, even today, achieve tenured positions in the hard sciences, Eileen Pollack set out to find the answer. A successful fiction writer, Pollack had grown up in the 1960s and ’70s dreaming of a career as a theoretical astrophysicist. Denied the chance to take advanced courses in science and math, she nonetheless made her way to Yale. There, despite finding herself far behind the men in her classes, she went on to graduate summa cum laude, with honors, as one of the university’s first two women to earn a bachelor of science degree in physics. And yet, isolated, lacking in confidence, starved for encouragement, she abandoned her ambition to become a physicist.

Years later, spurred by the suggestion that innate differences in scientific and mathematical aptitude might account for the dearth of tenured female faculty at Summer’s institution, Pollack thought back on her own experiences and wondered what, if anything, had changed in the intervening decades.

Based on six years interviewing her former teachers and classmates, as well as dozens of other women who had dropped out before completing their degrees in science or found their careers less rewarding than they had hoped, The Only Woman in the Room is a bracingly honest, no-holds-barred examination of the social, interpersonal, and institutional barriers confronting women—and minorities—in the STEM fields. Eileen Pollack is the author of the novels Breaking and Entering (a New York Times Editor’s Choice selection) and Paradise, New York, as well as two collections of short fiction, an award-winning book of nonfiction, and two creative-nonfiction textbooks. Her work has appeared in Best American Essays and Best American Short Stories. She is a professor on the faculty of the Helen Zell MFA Program in Creative Writing at the University of Michigan. She divides her time between Manhattan and Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Even in the 1970s, the sexism I experienced was rarely obvious. I grew up in a privileged, loving home with few barriers that might prevent a bright, confident young woman from succeeding in whatever field she took it in her head to enter. All this led me to suspect that the reasons for the scarcity of female physicists must be subtle, and those reasons must lie buried in the psyches of the women who loved science and math but never completed their degrees or, like me, earned their degrees but left their fields. . . . By trying to understand why I didn’t become a physicist, I hoped to gain insights into why so many young women still fail to go on in science and math in the numbers their presence in high school classrooms and their scores on standardized tests
predict.
 
What I discovered shocked me. Although more young women major in physics at Yale than when I attended school there, those young women told me stories of the sexism they had encountered in junior high and high school that seemed even more troubling than what I had experienced: complaints about being belittled and teased by their classmates and teachers, worries about being perceived as unfeminine or uncool. . . . The same forces that caused me to feel isolated and unsure of myself at Yale continue to hem in young women today, acting like an invisible electrified field to discourage all but the thickest skinned from following their passion for science, a phenomenon that turns out to be less true in other countries, where women are perceived as being equally capable in science and math as men.

Right mission, wrong flag-bearer

I care about the under-representation of women in STEM fields, and it pains me to give a book on this topic a low rating. Pollack expertly describes many of the subtle obstacles and pervasive barriers that deter women from STEM, but... These accounts were presented in the context of her own experiences, and I found many of her statements (and her own motivations) counterproductive to the stated mission of this book. Many things she said were outright insulting.

The first sign that something was wrong appeared in the book's preface:

"Even women who grow up to be feisty, successful feminists spend much of their adolescence obsessing about their appearance, romance, sex, and their popularity with female friends. ...girls may dumb them themselves down, hide or repress their interest in classes or activities their peers deem nerdy. They may develop crushes on their teachers and other older men, who don't see them as threatening and are all too happy to reciprocate their affection. A boy might pursue a subject because he respects the man who teaches it, but unless he is gay, he won't fall in love with that teacher, as so many young women do." (p. xx)

My reaction: WHAT?!

Her words reminded me of biochemist Tim Hunt's offensive statement that female scientists shouldn't work with male scientists because "You fall in love with them, they fall in love with you and when you criticize them, they cry." Pollack's statement implies not only that sexual attraction will create problems for female students of science, but that such problems are common. That will only deter male scientists from mentoring female students!

It only got worse as Pollack revealed again and again that romantic attraction motivated much of her scientific pursuits. While I appreciate her honesty, in this context honesty is damaging, especially because she portrayed her own motivates as commonplace instead of unique to her personality. Her story creates the impression that many women pursue science for male attention, and that romantic tension is a regular occurrence in interactions between male professors and female students. That is not only inaccurate (from my experience, anyway), it is incredibly counterproductive to the mission of getting more women in STEM fields.

This was such a theme in Pollack's story that I started a document to record unsettling and/or offensive quotes from the book. I nearly stopped reading altogether when I reached page 35, when Pollack reveals she had a romance with her high school debate teacher. I was disgusted. Three pages later, she describes how she visited Yale after receiving an offer of admission, and she decided to go there because she was attracted to a male physics professor after watching him lecture.

The last few chapters of the book depict solidarity among women who want to pursue STEM until they're discouraged or turned away, but this comes too late. Earlier in the book Pollack made it clear she disliked and felt competition with other women as a student. She had awe and respect only for men and wanted nothing to do with other women:

"But the women's movement seemed to mean women ended up spending more time with other women, and something called 'consciousness-raising groups,' and the last thing I wanted was to spend more time with women. If women ran the world, society would be less competitive. But I loved competing. How else could I prove to the brilliant, powerful men who rules the world but I was as smart and strong as they were?" (p. 21)

This passage was particularly offensive:

When describing the only other female physics major: "And as much as I enjoyed the sight of her shining, smiling face, I can't say we were friends. If a person's self-worth derives from being the only woman in the field, how much affection can she feel toward another woman who might challenge that claim to fame? Erika's decision to pursue a bachelor's of arts degree rather than the more demanding bachelor of science struck me as cheating. It was as if we had signed up to be marines, and here we were at boot camp, each wearing the same uniform, but Erika got to stay in the barracks and buff her nails while the rest of us jogged fifty miles in the rain." (p. 47)

Holy s***! Majoring in physics isn't easy, even if you're pursuing a B.A. instead of a B.S. The analogy she used--Erika buffing her nails, Pollack jogging fifty miles in the rain--was so insulting. Clearly Pollock thought very well of herself. Far from being a proponent of female representation in STEM, she wanted other women to abandon the field. She wanted to be the only woman in physics because it made her feel smart and special.

At this point, I was disgusted by Pollack, and I often paused my reading to vent to my husband whenever I encountered another offensive passage. But I kept reading, and it became more and more obvious that Pollack's pursuit of physics was at least partly motivated by a desire to attain men.

"Could anything be more exciting than carrying a pristine notebook embossed with 'Lux et veritas' to a lecture hall where I would finally begins the life I had been waiting eighteen years to start? My status as one of only two women in the auditorium struck me as less frightening than erotic; it was like going to a movie with 118 dates. I was even more excited when the professor turned out to be the same dark, bearded young man whose class I had visited the spring before." (p. 53)

"My new powers of understanding might have flowed from nothing more than Professor Zeller's voice murmuring seductively in my head: 'You can do it. Stick it out.'" (p. 58)

"My attraction to my professors kept me working to please them long after I might otherwise have given up." (p. 128)

Despite these criticisms, there were many things I did like about this book. Pollack describes the subtle ways women are discouraged from pursuing STEM, and the firsthand accounts of other women's struggles were great. I heartily agree with the message of this book, and more people need to know why we have too few female scientists. But at the same time, Pollack's own story could be counterproductive. Normally I appreciate honesty, but I wish she hadn't disclosed these things about herself. If readers assume her romantic motives are present in other women, it will exacerbate the problem.

In addition to her apparent disdain for other women (she only respected men's opinions), Pollack also derogates scientific disciplines that aren't physics. This passage angered me:

"As to why there are more female chemists then physicists, my hunch is most chemists aren't looking to explain the universe, only to produce a fabric that doesn't wrinkle or absorb odors, a vanilla pudding that tastes more vanilla-y, a bacterium that eats up oil." (p. 202)

She just insulted the ENTIRE FIELD OF CHEMISTRY! That is so offensive! As if physics is the only real science, the only one that truly requires intelligence and passion.

My last complaint about this book is how woefully it covers scientific research on gender disparity in STEM fields. (Ironic, isn't it?) There are hundreds of psychology experiments on this very issue. She briefly mentioned one study on stereotype threat (without describing the phenomenon of stereotype threat itself), but she completely ignored a vast literature whose inclusion would only bolster her arguments. For example, social psychologist Amanda Diekman has conducted terrific research on why some women avoid STEM and how to change this. (See: htt[...]) But you know what? I bet Pollack doesn't even consider psychology a science.

Again, I'm totally on board with the mission of this book, but I wish it had a different flag-bearer.

ANYONE WHO TEACHES SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING OR MATHEMATICS SHOULD READ THIS BOOK

Two hundred some pages into this mixed memoir and study of the reasons why so few women students continue in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, Pollack cites a 2012 study by researchers at Yale who sent out comparable but not identical resumes, half under the name of John and half under the name of Jennifer, with letters of recommendation and supporting material, to 127 faculty members in physics, chemistry and biology at six major research institutions in the United States . The faculty members were asked to rate “John” or “Jennifer” on a sliding scale as to their estimate of the candidate’s competence, hireability and likeability and their perceived willingness to mentor him or her if he or she was struggling. On every scale except “likeability,” the “male” candidate significantly outscored the “female,” even though the CVs and supporting materials were equivalent. The professors were asked to suggest a salary range they would be willing to offer their candidate. “John” was offered an average starting salary of $30,238; Jennifer $26,508.

When Pollack reported on this study on a website, one writer, a scientist, wrote back that the results didn’t show gender bias but rather the scientists’ “objective” knowledge that women are, on the average, less able than men. This response, Pollack notes, is a textbook definition of bias: a decision made on gut feeling, or a few anecdotal examples, taking no notice of individual differences. Pollack writes that sentiments like this discourage promising women students from sticking it out in STEM fields. There’s also a culture that makes assumptions about masculine and feminine behavior, blatantly favors the former over the latter, and holds women accountable to a higher standard of behavior than boys both in their studies and their work. It is these subtle and not-so subtle discouragers, from grade school on that drive women out of science and into more “supportive” and “people-oriented” fields.

A large part of this book is autobiographical, where some readers might prefer hard data, but that’s beside the point. Telling her own story enriches personalizes her message. Pollack was one of the first two women at Yale to graduate with a bachelor of science degree in physics. By the time she graduated, she had published articles and presented at a professional (not graduate student) conference. She graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. Yet she didn’t continue on in physics.

It took a while for her to figure out what she did want to do. Eventually she settled on writing. (The encouragement of novelist John Hersey helped.) Today she writes books and teaches writing at the University of Michigan and s he likes the life she leads. But she can’t help wonder if she might not also have liked the life she had dreamed of earlier, as a theoretical physicist, if one of her science teachers had encouraged her.

One difference between men and women STEM students, she notes, is that the men’s self-confidence is much stronger, as is their aggressiveness –they don’t need as much encouragement or mentoring. But it doesn’t mean men have more ability. Pollack describes about some of the programs in place now to encourage young women to continue in STEM fields but says we need an overhaul of attitudes to make the kind of difference we should be making. In the meantime, America continues to lose the better part of half its talent pool as women opt for less stressful and discouraging lives.

Every grade school, high school, college and university teacher of science or mathematics and every high school superintendent, principal, and guidance counselor should be required to read this book.
