About the Author
Abigail Reynolds may be a nationally bestselling author and a physician, but she can't follow a straight line with a ruler. Originally from upstate New York, she studied Russian and theater at Bryn Mawr College and marine biology at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole. After a stint in performing arts administration, she decided to attend medical school, and took up writing as a hobby during her years as a physician in private practice. A life-long lover of Jane Austen's novels, Abigail began writing variations on Pride & Prejudice in 2001, then expanded her repertoire to include a series of novels set on her beloved Cape Cod. Her most recent releases are the national bestseller Mr. Darcy's Noble Connections, Mr. Darcy's Refuge, A Pemberley Medley, and Morning Light, and she is currently working on a new Pemberley Variation and the next novel in her Cape Cod series. Her books have been translated into five languages. A lifetime member of JASNA, she lives on Cape Cod with her husband, her son and a menagerie of animals. Disappointing

I've been waiting for this book for months and was happy to hear it arrive (ping!) on my iPad last night. Unfortunately it isn't up to Ms. Reynolds' usual high standards. I'm not sure what happened but I'm just not feeling it. Variations are just that, variations, but the twist to Darcy's childhood is hard to believe. His father is not painted in a kind light, Darcy has very little 'pride' left, Richard is a broken man. It was also hard to believe that Charlotte would behave in the manner she does.The sexual intimacy is implied, not graphically described but that's fine. Noble Connections and Darcy's Obssession were G-rated but gripping. I wasn't that wild about the cat either. I know Snowball is a real pet but I didn't think she really added anything to the story. And finally I must admit I was surprised to find as many typos as I did. (On the plus side I did like the new valet, Crewe.) I think Abigail Reynolds is the best of the best but I was disappointed.

Overall disappointed because I cyber stalked Abigail for months waiting for this book to come out. I much prefer her earlier novels and the modern Woods Hole series.

Very Enjoyable

Having considerable exposure to P&P fanfiction, I can happily endorse Ms. Reynolds latest. Definitely a cut above the usual. It has a snug plot, good character development, and a happy ending. Reynolds doesn't feel obligated to address every single incident that occurs in P&P, which so often bogs other variations down. And although Elizabeth and Darcy's pulses were frequently racing, I would rate this PG-13 rather than R (which I appreciate).

One of the best sensory text books

This is one of the best sensory text books I've used through college and into my career. The value of this text is that it explains industry based sensory evaluations and provides sensory sheets and data pages that can be used for sensory projects. It may be missing some information on sensory theory, but its value is in how it can be applied to a practical setting.

Even though I have never taken a sensory course before, this book allows me a greater understanding of the information without bogging me down with complicated terms and lofty prose. The book also has great example throughout. And with the great price, who wouldn't buy it here? I told my classmates about it, and they are getting it here as well. Thanks!

Many of them are detailed technical drawings with all dimensions for building fully functional units. 1.3 Smoking, barbecuing, and grilling.

A lot of people don’t understand the difference between smoking, barbecuing, and grilling. When grilling, you quickly seal in the juices from the piece you are cooking. Grilling takes minutes. Smoking takes hours, sometimes even days.

Don’t be fooled by the common misconception that by throwing some wet wood chips over hot coals you can smoke your meat. At best you can only add some flavor on the outside because the moment the outside surface of the meat becomes dry and cooked, a significant barrier exists that prevents smoke penetration.

A properly smoked piece of meat has to be thoroughly smoked, on the outside and everywhere inside. Only prolonged cold smoking will achieve that result. Smoking when grilling is no better than pumping liquid smoke into it and claiming that the product is smoked now.

Let’s unravel some of the mystery. All these methods are different from each other, especially smoking and grilling. The main factor separating them is temperature

Smoking – almost no heat, 52° – 140° F, (12° - 60° C), 1 hr to 2 weeks

Barbecuing – low heat, 200° – 300° F, (93° - 150° C) few hours

Grilling – high heat, 500° F, (260° C), minutes

The purpose of grilling is to char the surface of meat and seal in the juices by creating a smoky caramelized crust. By the same token a barrier is erected that prevents smoke from flowing inside. The meat may have a somewhat smoky flavor on the outside but it was never smoked internally.

Barbecuing comes much closer, but not close enough. It is a long, slow, indirect, low-heat method that uses charcoal or wood pieces to smoke-cook the meat. The best definition is that barbecuing is cooking with smoke. It is ideally suited for large pieces of meat, like whole pigs. The temperature range of 200° –300° F is still too high to smoke meats since the fat that binds meat in sausages will melt away through the casings, and the final product will taste like bread crumbs.

Smoking is what it says: smoking meats with smoke that may or may not be followed by cooking. Some products are only smoked at low temperatures and never cooked, yet are safe to eat. Generally we may say that smoking in most cases consists of two steps:

Smoking
Cooking

After smoking is done we increase the temperature to about 170°F (76° C) to start cooking. We want to cook meats or sausages to 152 F° (67° C) internal temperature and here the quality and insulation of the smoker plays an important role. Nevertheless the main smoking process is performed below 140° F.

There are important differences between smoking and barbecuing. Barbecued or grilled meats are eaten immediately the moment they are done. Smoked meats are usually eaten at a later date. When smoking foods a higher degree of smoke penetration is needed and that can only be achieved at lower temperatures. Furthermore, smoked meats are eaten cold. Many great recipes require that smoked products hang for a designated time to lose more weight to become drier. It is only then that they are ready for consumption.

For when knowing WHY is better than just what.

written by a family who used this information to survive post WWII eastern europe. Instead of telling you to use use salt or potasium they explain why it is required for different applications. They explain the difference between Cold Smoking, Hot smoking and in between and what is good and bad for each . Very well written in plain language that is easy to understand. It explains how some smoke treatment is a preservative and other smoke treatment is a flavoring agent. Most importantly is explains the difference, explains the advantages and limitations and lists how to achieve either condition. It also knocks down the pie in the sky assumption that all smoke is created equal :) Cool smoke is required for long term preservation. But cool smoke is not able to be produced if the outside air temperature is already hotter than your target smoke temperature. You either have to wait until wintertime or work during night time hours if you arent ready to spend the thousands of dollars for smoke heat regulators that is.

The Definitive Work!

Preface:
This review is for the Kindle version. I also own the non-digital version as well and I prefer it. If you have to choose get the non-digital. I use the Kindle version because I travel a lot and don't want to haul a bunch of books around. However when I am home and looking through smoke-house designs I look at the physical version.

This is THE definitive work on smoke and smoke-house design. The authors (a father and his two sons) put in a truck-load of information.
If you are serious about smoking you definitely need to have this in your library.
Pros:
photos and diagrams are relatively easy to understand.
Great historical approach.
Smoke-theory and even some liquid (air is treated as a liquid) dynamics.
Smoke-theory applied to a number of meat-types. Avian, Fish, and of course land-dwellers.

Cons:
Hardback not available.
More color diagrams.
More blue-prints.

Additional comments (because we all have them).
I would LOVE to see this split into two books, where the first book is all smokeing theory and the second book a book of blue-print and design.

great information

This is the best meat smoking book I've read period. You won't find a recipe in here or how to cut up a beef but when it comes to how a smokehouse works and why this has it all. This book covers different designs of smokers along with different techniques. I have been using my homemade digitally controlled ugly drum smoker for years. It is hard to beat when it comes to slow cooking a brisket or even a turkey but, I have never been able to lay a heavy smoke and cool temps required to smoke bacon or fish. This book has all the information I needed to modify my smoker to lay down that heavy smoke and also the woods I should be looking for to do it.

It is only that I read this simplified French version, I feel the great the author is.

On the other hand, this simplified version is not as good as the simplified French versions from this publisher, CIDEB. Perhaps the book is too great and too good to simplify.

The background information in this book is useful. More French words are not usually seen in modern time.

Jim Bainbridge is a graduate of Harvard Law School and has been an active member of the California Bar for more than 30 years. He is a licensed California real estate broker, and a past recipient of a National Science Foundation Fellowship for graduate studies in mathematics at UC Berkeley. He is the author numerous works that have been published in more than 50 journals in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, and the Netherlands.

Mr. Bainbridge is also a member of the Real Estate Educators Association (REEA) and has received recognition as a Certified Distance Education Instructor by IDECC, which is a function of the Association of Real Estate License Law Officials.

Great Practice

I took the online ProSchools course and learned absolutely nothing. I bought this book and the exam prep book and studied it for a month, took the actual PSI practice exam ($20) then took my exams. I passed both the state and the national Real Estate exams on the first try. Worked for me! The exams question are similar and the content covered valuable. Just be aware that you will likely encounter at least 5-10% of the real exam questions as what I call "wild hair" questions. Meaning they are bad questions, out of left field. Just expect that you won't know everything.

Inspirational, excellent for beginners

I think this is excellent book for beginners, beautifully printed and very inspiring. But if you already have some experience in terraring, you may want to look for another book, this one covers the very basics.

I knew absolutely nothing about moss terrariums and now I have 5 little wonders which I created after reading this book. One is going to be a birthday present for my friend, very inexpensive but extremely attractive - you can't even tell I've spent $12 on it! It really looks like $100 :)

The only thing which deserves a star down is the fact authors didn't focus on figures much and didn't provide really good source where we can get them - which are, in my opinion, play very important role in designing the whole thing. That was those funny figures which made me buy this book, and inside I haven't found the answer where to get those and what to look for. The webstore they refer to doesn't offer anything like pictured in the book. I started to research this subject and found HobbyLinc which offers plenty of the figures in every poses imaginable. So if you are like me and want to create terrarium with good figures, look for railroad modeller's stuff. The brands which offer good figures are Noch, Preiser, Faller, Woodland Scenics.

Authors also do not cover the scales of figures needed, so I was confused and ordered the wrong size first. Later I realized that figures in HO size/scale work best, but for smaller terrariums you may want to get even smaller sizes.

I have also found out that moss doesn't like lime, and if you spray terrarium with lime-containing tap water, it may die. I am not sure if authors cover that thing in the book, so be careful. Some people suggest using rain water for moss.

All in all, I wouldn't rate the book 4 stars just because of the figures, but since it's titled "Tiny world", I think it's crucial to provide sources where to get the tiny things and educate readers about figure's scales. I had to make my own research.

A little bit of green for those without a garden

I've always loved plants. Gardens. Forests. Parks. The problem was; although I wanted, no needed, to have more green things on my life; I didn't have the space or the funding to actually create a plant-filled space for myself. I may have not been exactly blessed with a green thumb either.
I decided to try a new approach to "indoor gardening" and bought Tiny World Terrariums. Filled with great ideas, easy to follow instructions, and wonderful care tips; I finally have been able to create my own terrarium. And it's not dying. Hooray!
The part about this book that makes it more than just a terrarium how-to guide is how the authors have literally created their own miniature plant-filled worlds. Their terrarium illustrations show beautiful small scale scenes complete with tiny animals and people. And then they provide step by step instructions on how to recreate them! The creations are truly beautiful and completely elevate the idea of crafting a terrarium to so much more than just putting plants under glass.
I highly recommend this book: not only is it quite informative, but inspiring as well.

All You Need to Create Your Own Tiny World

I've been talking about creating a terrarium for months now and was over the moon when my sister surprised me with this book. I had looked at some online guides and flipped through other books about getting started but was a little bit intimidated -- it seemed like this might really be HARD. This book resolved that fear entirely. The authors really break down the projects into simple, easy to follow instructions. The pictures are lovely and inspiring but what really made me happy was how detailed and richly imagined the "tiny worlds" were. Some of the other guides I've seen covered the basic "how to" stuff but left out the details that truly personalize your project and make the finished product shine. If you're looking for fresh ideas on containers, super actionable instructions and thoughtful suggestions for making your terrarium come alive, this is the book for you.

I had the first edition and needed the 2nd for another class. One of the best books to carry as a quick reference. I am using it to brush up before clinicals. Also bought The Tarascon pocket references for internal medicine & critical care and Pharmacopoeia. Which will be helpful for my FNP SOAP notes.

This book offers a succinct idea of how to develop differential diagnoses. It does not offer treatment regimens or complete discussions of disease processes. I enjoyed this book and continue to use it throughout my NP program to help me completely develop differential diagnoses.

Why else would I buy it. Helpful in making clinical diagnosis. It gives brief outlines of differential diagnosis and includes labs/tests to order to R/O the disease.
