Great Book for Beginners or Bloggers Needing a Brush Up

I’ve been blogging since 2009, which isn’t a long time compared to others I know, but long enough for me to look at the resources available today and lament about how much time they would have saved me during my learning curves. Yep, plural.

Caimin Jones wrote an SEO book that is easy to follow and I eventually just started reading it in front of the computer so that I could put into practice everything I was learning. Not only is there a clear explanation of what we’re doing and why we’re doing it, but there are links to where we can get started.

The best part of the book, for me, was the keyword section. I was hit with a heavy dose of “ohh yeahhh” and immediately started making changes to how I was linking to other site and to pages within my own site. Caimin goes further by giving a step by step guide to using Google’s keyword tool that I toyed around with for hours – enjoying having the brush up on how to best use this free tool.

The next best part is a breakdown of several sections of Google Analytics. I’m familiar with GA and visit the site to study my stats weekly, but this section provided directions on where to go to get exactly what I need and I’m excited to be putting better use to an amazing tool.

If you’re brand new to blogging and want to build a successful blog (i.e. traffic traffic traffic) you NEED to buy this book. If you’ve been blogging for a while and haven’t spent much time on SEO, then I recommend investing (come on, it’s a steal) in this book and the time to take a new look at your blog.

This book is an extremely valuable resource for any business looking to gain traction in search and make an impact on Google. Some may say it would be for beginners but I say Good SEO books are great for everyone. I have had the pleasure of reading many SEO books in my time and I am glad I took the time to read this book. From keyword selection to content these first two steps were covered in great detail and opened some new areas for me personally. The book goes into optimization and talks about placement, density linking, authorship, sitemaps and metatags all are extremely important to a successful online campaign. Each topic was covered and explained well. The book also talks about the importance of Social Media and what you can do to ensure full social exposure. The next step talked about Building links and what directories are free and should be used by to gain more traction. Another topic that was covered was website speed, this is extremely important to websites and the details and direction given are actionable and can be implemented immediately. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is trying to better understand SEO, Google and ranking factors and what you can do to be successful with both. Easy to read, lots of links to helpful sites and a complete overview of getting traffic on Google. Ever wondered how to make a impact on Google? This book is a great place to start!

About the Author
Ali A. Behagi received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California and the MS degree in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan. He has several years of industrial experience with Hughes Aircraft and Beckman Instruments. Dr. Behagi joined Penn State University as an associate professor of electrical engineering in 1986. He has devoted over 20 years to teaching microwave engineering courses and directing university research projects. While at Penn State he received a National Science Foundation grant to establish a microwave and RF engineering lab and the Keysight/Agilent software grant to use in teaching high frequency circuit design courses and laboratory experiments. After retirement from Penn State he has been active as an educational consultant. Dr. Behagi is a Keysight Certified Expert, a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Microwave Theory and Techniques Society.

Refreshing use of simulation in learning a math heavy subject

It's refreshing to see a textbook on RF and microwave engineering that adopts a practical hands on approach through the use of computer simulation to make the subject come alive on screen. It's the same approach used by RF design engineers to develop products these days. Learning with hands-on computer simulation also develops better engineering intuition than reading an old-fashion textbook laden with math equations.

Acquiring this valuable lifetime knowledge for less than $50 is money well invested I believe.

Obedience in Finances

Obedience in Finances was a great quick read about how to trust God with your finances. It was full of scripture on the subject. Kenneth Hagin is always the go to man on building your faith in God for any area of your life and this book was the same. It calls you to go deeper with God by releasing any fear/bondage that have built walls against your faith in this area.
I will pass it on to a friend after reading it a second time. This is a small book that would be good to stick into a gift for a new Christian.

King of elephants, knave of theory

My two year old son loves the pictures in this book, especially the giant blue whale and the tan camels. But don't take it too seriously as an introduction to mixing color. Babar may be king of the elephants but as a color theorist, he's a lightweight. Babar tells us that mixing the three primary colors makes black. Then, a few pages later, he tells us that to make brown you have to mix the three primary colors PLUS black. What? But I thought... Also strange--the "what will you paint with white?" illustration done in ice blue and every color BUT white. The problem isn't the contradictions but the fact that De Brunhoff sets himself up with the difficult task of bridging color theory, practice, and artistic convention in less than 30 pages. In a children's book! But kids will probably like the bright, clean illustrations. Also odd (in a non-color mixing way)--the page where Flora, Babar's elephant daughter, paints a herd of ten naked elephants.

Fun even for "non-Babar" fans!

Even if you're not a Babar fan, you should seriously consider this over-sized book filled with vibrant illustrations. It's a fun introduction on how mixing two or more colors can create a whole new color. And yes (as the other reviewer correctly points out) some of the suggested mixing formulas aren't likely to produce the same outcome as the book would suggest, but hey, this is Babar's Book of Color afterall... not Isaac Newton's theory of color.

I have a niece In New Haven, CT. who is raising a two year old boy as a single Mom. As the Babar books were special to her mother and me, I have started her a collection of the Babar stories. I also sent little Paul a Babar Jack-In-The-Box to go with the book.

essential, how is it that no one has written a book like this before?

Finally, a structured, practical book on socially engaged art! Very thought provoking. I can hardly believe that a book like this hasn't been written before, as relational aesthetics have extended to include global politics and many artists seem to think that "(moving) image quoting" in a journalistic style equals political art...which I suppose it does actually, but actually where the credit needs to be given is to feminist art of the 1970's for kicking the whole process of political analysis off and rescuing art from aesthetic double binds and removal from actual human life.
Helguera touches on many possibilities and options for creating Socially Engaged Art, providing a framework to think both within and without...Helguera provides both positive and negative examples of socially engaged art, and does not necessarily guide the reader towards any foregone conclusion, I found it very open (the book) to interpretation...extremely thought provoking. I wonder what will come after socially engaged art, or if anything will. What is more human artwise than engaging socially with the world? Art is after all a human activity and eventual product made for human consumption--Helguera's book shows that beyond just relational art that art can indeed be USEFUL and this is, for me anyway, what I have been waiting for. And as Helguera gives credit to, artist Suzanne Lacy in particular can be seen as one precursor or model or example for a lot of what is happening today concerning this urgent development in culture...It's truly time for BEHAVIOR to take center stage in the art world!

This is an extremely smart and thoughtful exploration of socially engaged art. Helguera manages to be both incredibly practical and impressively learned in his approach. As a practitioner, it spoke to many of the issues and questions that I've grappled with. It's also very clear, concise, and compelling--I read it in one sitting! It's the book I've been hoping someone would write about the subject...

About the Author

Vivian M. May is Associate Professor and Chair of Women’s & Gender Studies at Syracuse University. She is author of Anna Julia Cooper, Visionary Black Feminist (Routledge, 2007), and of numerous articles and chapters focused on Black feminist intellectual history, feminist theory and literature, and theorizing Women’s Studies as a field. Recently, May was elected President of the National Women's Studies Association for a two-year term (2015 & 2016).
