Aspects of Personal Privacy in Communications is mostly about understanding what privacy is and some of the technologies may help us to regain a bit of privacy. We discuss what privacy is about, what the different aspects of privacy may be and why privacy needs to be there by default. There are boundaries between personal privacy and societal requirements, and inevitably society will set limits to our privacy (Lawful Interception, etc.). There are technologies that are specifically designed to help us regain some digital privacy. These are commonly known as Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs). We investigate some these PETs including MIX networks, Onion Routing and various privacy-preserving methods. Other aspects include identity and location privacy in cellular systems, privacy in RFID, Internet-of-Things (IoT) and sensor networks amongst others. Some aspects of cloud systems are also covered. About the Author
Geir M. Koien is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at University of Agder, Norway. He received his PhD. degree in Communications (2008) from Aalborg University, Denmark. He is a senior member of the IEEE and a senior member of the ACM. His current research interests include sys- tem architecture and access security, privacy and trust with special focus on telecommunication systems. He has previously worked for Ericsson Norway and Telenor R&D with research and development within the 3GPP mobile systems, and he was the Telenor delegate to the standardization work in the 3GPP SA3 (Security) work group for 10 years. He received the Best Paper Award in ACM WiSe in 2005 and in MobiSec in 2010. Vladimir A. Oleshchuk is a Professor of Computer Science at University of Agder, Norway. He received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science (1988) from the Taras Shevchenko Kiev State University, Kiev, Ukraine. From 1987 to 1991, he was Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor at the Taras Shevchenko University. He is employed at the University of Agder since 1992, first as Associate Professor, and then as Full Professor. He is a senior member of the IEEE and a senior member of the ACM. He has served as a program committee chair, program committee member and reviewer for many international conferences. His current research interests include formal methods and information security, privacy and trust with special focus on telecommunication systems and eHealth. He received the Best Paper Award in IEEE MDM 2012.

Too shallow and too market-y for my tastes.

The first thing that rubbed me the wrong way was the foreword by Robert Martin. In it Martin discusses that John emailed him a zip of the book and wanted a foreword written by a certain date. Martin wasn't able to do so because John only gave him 3 days notice. John sent Martin cheese and a ham and sent Martin multiple emails in which he was "imploring" Martin to write a foreword.

Eventually Martin says he skimmed some of the book in a few hours and wrote a shallow foreword for it. It just befuddles me that it would be included in the book as it is hardly glowing and doesn't put John in a very good light. I'm guessing having a half good foreword by a very well known member of the community beats a great foreword by someone that has no name recognition.

The biggest thing that struck me about this book is how shallow it is. In a book with 71 chapters, it is a bit hard to avoid this. Yet as I read it, I kept thinking about how each chapter could be summarized with a single paragraph in the way that it was written. Each chapter spanned 5-20 pages and contained the same amount of fluff.

All of the knowledge in each of the chapters could be learned by doing a single Google search on the topic. It certainly combines it all into a single place which might be convenient for some but the lack of true insight on the topics was very off putting. In books like these, the value is in the application and new ideas that come about from the author's experience and knowledge. I just didn't see any evidence of this regardless of how much John says that his ideas are brand new and better than the researchers and people that devote their lives to these topics.

The book is comprised of 7 sections: Career, Marketing, Learning, Productivity, Financial, Fitness and Spirit. Considering the shallowness that I mentioned, it would be easy to replace those sections with 7 well chosen and concise books written by researchers in each field with far more knowledge and practical advice.

In an incredibly creepy bit of advice, Chapter 5 entitled, what else other than "Hacking the Interview", John advocates hunting down the people that will be involved in the hiring decision for your interview and influencing them before the actual interview. In one example, he cites a developer that went so far as to find a local club that the hiring manager was apart of and went there and "became friends" with the manager. I think this is absolutely terrible advice that violates basic privacy fundamentals and business ethics. In some respects, it echoes the tactics used to get Robert Martin to write a foreword.

In the section about finances, it was shocking to hear how much of the "hustler" vibe that was given off. From renting out gumball machines (I didn't know that was a thing?), to helping start a payday loan business. I decided to ignore it and continue with the book. After reading it, I went to John's website, Simple Programmer. It completely confirmed my suspicion on the "market-ing" vibe that is given off. Who wouldn't want to "GREATLY increase your income" and "In Three Weeks" learn "How to Build a Blog That Will Boost Your Career" just by signing up for his email course that pops up within seconds of going to the site for the first time.

I'm a big fan of programmer blogs and other resources like that. I also think that there are some resources out there with far better information than this book. The obvious blogs being Joel Spolsky's writings, Jeff Atwood, Paul Graham, and Yegge. There are even some really great podcasts that delve into topics in this book. Software Engineering Radio is one as well as The Changelog, Hanselminutes and others. Really a quick search can help you find some good ones.

To summarize, I think any one that wants to read this would be better off finding individual books on each of the sections and reading them. There also are far better blogs out there with more content than this book. Not only will the advice be much more salient and more plentiful, but you'll also be able to avoid the marketing. If you hope that John's website will be a bit more content rich, you'll be even more disappointed with the shotgun-like approach to articles with a ton of ads and more than enough urgings for you to subscribe to his stuff.

The book I wish I'd had 30 years ago

I've been a fan of John's since I kept finding his blog posts as thought-provokers coming up in search results.

Soft Skills is now up there on my list of core professional books alongside "Pragmatic Programmer" and "Pragmatic Thinking and Learning" (I guess there but for choice of publisher goes "Pragmatic Sweat, Money and Success as a Developer"). It's not a technical book - the most technical thing in it is a recommendation to read "Code Complete" and "Clean Code". It's THE everything-else-apart-from-coding book.

The book is a very easy read with an awesome range of material covered in small, Pomodoro break-sized pieces. So, my recommendation is to skip to chapter 38, start applying Pomodoro as John describes, and give yourself a quota of chapters to digest every day.

My biggest critique is a chapter title - "Brushing your code" really should have been "Flossing your code" - Flossing gets more truly grungy stuff out of awkward corners and lots of feel regularly guilty about not doing it.

I wish, I really really wish, I'd read this book about 30 years ago because I had to figure out a lot of the self-promotional stuff the hard way. I'll probably spend the next 20 years working on my physique and real-estate portfolio.

I'm painfully well-qualified to comment on just how good John's recommendations are because I've applied a lot of them over the last 30 years, including working for myself, remotely and now being in a startup. I can tell you that a lot of the stuff works because I've proved that when you stop following his recommendations, bad things happen.

Personal kaizen!

John Sonmez has divided the book into seven sections with between 7-17 chapters in each, a total of 71 chapters all in all. They are short and to the point (5-10 pages each), and most of them can be read individually, i.e. you can read the book from cover to cover, or jump to the parts you are interested in and continue on from there.

The ”Career” section is, that you can imagine, useful tips on how to setup career goals, gain people skills, write a good resume and pass the interview. But it’s also about what different type of options you have (employee, independent consultant, or entrepreneur) and how to think if you want to switch.

Section 2, ”Marketing yourself” was a real eye opener for me personally. I never had thought about it in this way. I tried out some of the stuff mentioned, and it didn’t take long before I could see positive result! You have to read the section yourself to fully understand, but I can give you some quotes: ”marketing is a multiplier of talent”, ”a brand is a promise” and ”follower to fan”. In this section you can also find the advice that you should give away 90% of what you do for free (that personified John’s willingness to help me).

”Learning” is a very important section, given the ever evolving world we live in. I like the idea with the 10-step process for learning, though I haven’t had the time to try it out yet.

”Productivity” is another personal favorite of mine. Who don’t want to be productive? I really like chapter 37 - ”My Personal Productivity Plan”. It has a personal touch that I like, with great examples and pictures. The do’s and don'ts from chapter 41 about multi-tasking are also very good.

Section 5, ”Financial” has a very good tip on how to negotiate salary that is worth at least a 10% raise :) I can’t leave this section without mentioning chapter 55 - ”Bonus: How I retired at 33”. It’s very personal, and really shows that a travel from A to B usually aren’t a straight line.

To become a good software developer, or any knowledge worker for that matter, your body has to be reasonably ”up to speed” with your brain. This is covered in the ”Fitness” section. Maybe the most ”geek friendly” advice is the one about using a standing desk together with a treadmill.

Finally, section 7 is about ”Spirit”. Beforehand this was the least appealing section for me. But John does a good job not turning this into some spiritual mumbo jumbo.

Recommendation

When I re-read the foreword by Uncle Bob it all of a sudden clicked for me! This book is not about career, marketing yourself or fitness (well it is, but you understand what I mean). This book is about never giving up, to everyday make the version of yourself a little bit better than yesterday. I believe that this book will be a game changer for many software developers or knowledge workers in general (most of its content are applicable to larger audience). At least it has been for me. I can truly recommend ”Soft Skills”, its personal kaizen!

Great Ideas and Approaches for Managers and Leaders

A great book if you want to really work with your staff but aren't sure how to approach it. Having a variety of authors providing spot on, real-world examples, you'll walk away with new tools and approaches.

Coaching is about listening, asking penetrating questions and developing mutually agreed upon action plans. The authors honor coaching, and show how to apply these methods in very common situations.

Highly recommend the book and the ideas. It's especially good for new managers and leaders.

Essential guide

This is a short but sweet guide in how to hopefully make the most out of your employees or direct reports. Shouting and threatening them is no longer enough!

Today’s employees can be empowered, given some freedoms, encouraged to grow and develop and generally work for the best of the company. All employees are different and you as a manager or supervisor might have been thrown into this seemingly impossible job at the deep end. Most managers and supervisors are not as accomplished at people management than they may think. We all have room to improve. This coaching guide might give a few hints, tips and underline existing knowledge.

Think of it another way. You might have a top-of-the-range sports car or a rusty old banger. Yet both vehicles are capable of being tuned to make them run even better, more efficiently, more effortlessly and to make the most of their individual potential. This is the same with staff at all levels within a company.

This book is the sum of combined thoughts of many experts in the field. It seamlessly manages to get under your skin, getting you thinking and considering matters in a non-threatening manner. One senior leader noted how being coached helped him understand that he could make the biggest difference by doing more than everyone else but by empowering other people to do more and motivating them to do their best, letting go of certain responsibilities and recognizing the limits of his expertise. As a leader, he said, “I didn’t need to have all the answers; I just needed to ask the right questions.” That is the sign of confidence and leadership maturity.

Yet so many don’t seem to get the benefits of coaching, it is said. Many companies view and use coaching as an investment or perk for the senior staff, others view it as a corrective measure for those who don’t perform. Coaching can be and should be for all. It can create challenges and change within a company yet when harnessed correctly it should be a positive catalyst rather than a threat.

Reading this book is not onerous. Each standalone chapter is capable of being read quickly. Digesting and implementing the ideas will take longer. The tone and style encouraged you consider the arguments, selling you to their benefits and underlining the reasons why you might want and need change.

It is a great little book. Of course there are no shortage of such coaching resources yet this is a good composite of many ideas and thoughts, parceled up into a very accessible, ready reference type of book. Whether you are thinking of taking your first steps along the route to coaching or you are already an old pro sold on the idea, this could be a great little companion!

Very useful! A must read for all leadership coaches

Giving feedback or coaching is one of the most important skills our managers and leaders need to learn for their respective organizations to flourish and succeed. I’ve seen countless of articles, books, videos as well as audio materials catering to the development of this important competency in our leadership. Nevertheless, the campaign to make our leaders better in coaching is far from over since this is a skill that needs to be continuously honed no matter how seasoned our leaders are.

Harvard Business Review has recently published the book entitled HBR Guide to Coaching Employees. This is part of the HBR Guide Series of books which delves into the important skills our business leaders need to hone to be effective in delivering results.

This particular book on coaching is written like a compilation of articles written by different experts on the field of leadership coaching. You will get to feel the different styles in writing for each individual as they contribute to the development of the ideas in the book.

Some of the things that readers may particularly appreciate are the following:
1. Includes great insights on coaching which many are violating most of the time. All throughout the book, experts sight many important things to consider when coaching that are usually violated such as inability to make a follow up; not setting aside time for coaching; and, etc. More importantly the book provides numerous ways on how to do it right.
2. Different perspectives. Since many experts contributed to this book, readers will see different perspectives which put the subject into a more holistic way. Different writing styles also make reading more engaging.
3. Most importantly, this book acknowledges the fact that individual differences are important considerations on how one coach.

There are many important lessons here in this book. I am sure that for those who are engaged in developing individuals not just from the rank-and-file employee level but more importantly in leadership level, this book is a must read.

Some Good Insights, but Discernment Needed

In "A Tale of Three Kings" author Gene Edwards examines two relationships in the life of David - Saul and Absalom - and from them he draws insights that believers can apply to their own authority-related issues. Instead of approaching these Scriptural accounts like a traditional devotional writer, he retells the stories in a semi-fictionalized fashion. This approach yields some beautiful, moving prose that almost reads like poetry in places, but it also leaves the door open to the author inserting his own conjecture into the story. I'm willing to accept a little artistic license, but Edwards goes over the top in my opinion. For example, in the prologue he spins a pure fable in which God tells Gabriel to allow the yet-to-be-born spirits of David and Saul to choose their destinies. This "Mall of Unborn Destinies", as Edwards calls it, sounds more like Mormonism than Biblical Christianity. I doubt that the author meant it that way, but it illustrates the pitfalls of the fictionalizing approach.

Aside from style-related problems, Edwards does cull some meaningful insights from the story of David and Saul in Part 1. David's refusal to rebel against Saul, especially when he had the chance to kill him, is a powerful illustration of how we need to react to our authorities, even those who are abusing their position. The author makes some excellent points about how God used David's suffering to bring him to a point of brokenness, and how David always treated Saul as God's anointed despite his wicked behavior.

His observations in Part 2 are less helpful. He makes some good points about David's humble heart and how we need to examine ourselves and trust God when someone is challenging our authority, but he wrongly portrays David's reaction to Absalom's rebellion. When Joab asks David how he plans to respond, David says he plans "to do absolutely nothing" (p.72). As presented here, David knows about Absalom's rebellion before it happens, but refuses to do anything to forestall it; he just puts everything in God's hands and quietly leaves Jerusalem so God can reveal His will.

Edwards closes the book with this passive withdrawal, but the rest of the Biblical account gives some needed balance. Yes, David was submitted to Gods' will (cf. 2 Sam 15:25-26) but the Biblical text makes it pretty clear that David's departure was not a gracious withdrawal - Absalom had blindsided him, and he was fleeing for his life! "Arise, and let us flee; or else we shall not escape from Absalom. Make haste to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly and bring disaster upon us" (2 Samuel 15:14, NKJV).

After escaping capture, David sends several allies back to Jerusalem as spies (2 Samuel 15:27-37), and in 2 Sam 18:1-6, he organizes his loyal forces and sends them to attack Absalom's army. David was hardly doing "absolutely nothing"!

To sum it up, "A Tale of Three Kings" is skillfully written and has some helpful insights, but it overlooks the fact that a rebel can be confronted without being either a spear-throwing Saul or a complacent pacifist.

Is there a tyrant or a brat in your life?

Do you work or live with a tyrant? Got a spoiled brat in your life? David did. Had both. He served a crazy king who tried to kill him and had a vain, self-absorbed son who tried to usurp him. Both nearly succeeded.
How David coped with these insane situations with God's love, grace, and wisdom have changed my life. The patience, respect for God, surrender, and trust in the Lord spoke powerfully to me through the years of history between us. David's unique reactions revealed Jesus Christ to me in a new way.
David's struggles dwarfed mine but the lessons of his life challenged me to become a better Christian - a man of honor - a man of God.
Gene Edwards has a gift for cutting through difficult topics on a unique slant. He brings a new level of understanding to old problems, stories, and issues. There were times when reading this book that I had to stop, lay it down, and catch my breath as new revelation washed over me.
A strong recommendation for the thoughtful believer who is willing to go to the next level of faith.

A profound look into the purpose of why Christians suffer

A Tale Of Three Kings is a an awesome piece of Christian literature. If you are tired of all the "holy spirit, healing, prosperity, achieving wealth through biblical principles" type books, than Gene Edwards is your man. In this book, Gene lays out a refreshing perspective on brokeness that is not quite traditional in mainstream "Sunday school, pulpit preachings". Through his wonderful and simplistic story telling style, Gene goes into the depths of the hearts of three kings, namely King Saul, King David, and King Absolom. Not only will this book aid in your journey towards the deep things of the Lord and His ways, but it will cause us to look into our very hearts and ask the question, "which heart of these Kings do I have....." Indeed men fix things that break, but after we read this book we emerge w/ the understanding that God breaks men to fix them.
