Great western series

I owned this series a number of years ago. Donated it to a resale store after reading it twice. Decided it I wanted to read it again because good westerns are hard to find. Luckily, I was able to find the entire series at Amazon. I will be keeping it this time. Series has well-developed characters who learn and become better people as series continues. Plenty of action for the western lover as well.

6 Star Handbook for Saving Civilization & Earth

This book makes the jump from 5 stars (generally I don't bother to review a book if it is not a four or five star read) to 6 stars -- my top ten percent -- because of the combination of Questions Asked, glorious color graphics, and the total holistic nature of the book -- this is easily a PhD thesis in holistic analytics, true cost economics, and open source everything engineering. Indeed, this book could be used as a first-year reference across any humanities and science domain, they would be the better for it.

It is of value to ministers of government, managers of corporations, administrators of non-profit and educational organizations, labor union and religious stewards, and every single citizen planning to be alive in five years and beyond.

through each of seven chapters and a conclusion where deep questions are asked and answered, to the references, where a bitly shortcut is easily used for each and every reference, I am simply delighted to have this compilation of life-affirming wisdom in my hands.

This is a practical book and it is a spiritual book. I particularly like the six points made by David Orr in the first of two Forewords, the sixth of which suggests that systems thinking -- holistic design -- is akin to the core nature of religion in binding us all together in our stewardship of the Earth as a shared habitat.

I cannot over-state the value of the questions asked in each chapter. This is a book that Joan Blades and Living Room Conversations could easily take on as a global starting point for the one conversation that matters most, the question of who we are and why we are more worthy together than apart.

As I go through the book, I see the humility of the questions -- this is a book that embraces the idea that "we" can come up with better answers than the author by himself -- and the very wide net the author has cast to capture the thoughts of others that are very elegantly distilled in this easy to read, very broad, and also very deep, manifesto for the future of humanity and Earth.

Collective design is what you get when you achieve collective intelligence. The author has done a fine job of tapping into the pioneering works of others such as Elinor Ostrom who earned the Nobel for her book Governing the Commons: The Evolution of Institutions for Collective Action (Political Economy of Institutions and Decisions), and Tom Atlee, who did not, but could, for his collected works including The Tao of Democracy: Using Co-Intelligence to Create a World that Works for All.

As the book morphs from introduction to conclusion it comes together with two other books I have recently reviewed, by circumstance also 6-Star books (the portal to all my reviews sorted by 98 categories and each star class is at Phi Beta Iota Public Intelligence Blog / Reviews (Page), Pedro Ortiz's The Art of Shaping the Metropolis, and Parag Khanna's book, Connectography: Mapping the Future of Global Civilization. The author ends strongly, to include an introduction to holistic planning of land, biological monitoring, grazing, and finance. He draws ably from others -- for example, Figure 25 on page 223, is a redrawn version of The Solidarity Economy building on the work of Ethan Miller.

I am stunned to find that Figure 29 is from The Open-Source Everything Manifesto: Transparency, Truth, and Trust (Manifesto Series) so I cannot help but be moved by the fact that the author detected and understood why we must migrate from an economics for the few to an economics for the many, and the only way to do that affordably and scalably is by embracing "open" across all domains, not just the information technology domain -- the five billion poor must be empowered with free energy, free clean water, free pressed-brick shelters, and free Internet access, in return they will innovate and create infinite wealth with a regenerative aspect.

The book ends, and I quote (page 268):

"Living the questions is an opportunity to connect, to yourself, to your community, to your world."

Somebody give this guy an honorary PhD -- he has more than earned it. While I always liked E. O. Wilson, his stuff is hard to read -- a precursor in some ways to this book, Consilience: The Unity of Knowledge, gave me a headache despite the importance of the material. Similarly, while very subtly present, the spiritual aspect of this book is in keeping with the very best of other works, such as James Molben's God and Science: Coming Full Circle?.

On my Latino side, going back to my mother's family in Spain via Colombia, the family motto was "Que Vivas" -- that you might live! Indeed. The author has provided a manifesto for life. I could not be more impressed.

Very interesting, highly unusual!

Cured is a remarkable book about quite incredible science....and a pretty good story to boot. Natalia Holt has done some very good research here. One of the things, perhaps the most interesting, that she's found is that the best work, the most creative, most daring, most cutting edge work on HIV (and a host of other diseases, too) is not being done by the big corporations, the big pharma companies.
Just the opposite is at work, the innovative research is being done mostly by small biotech companies, such as Sangamo Biotech, in Richmond, California. They are using something called ZFNs, zinc finger nuclease. As I understand it there were some small villages in Europe where over many years, whenever the Black Plague or similar terrible things struck, killing off millions of people, the people from these small towns were spared, they didn't get sick.
Something in their makeup was protecting them, and over the years scientists studied these people in these villages, looking for what it was that made them different, that protected them. One of the things they found was a small finger-shaped growth on blood cells, one that was high in zinc, and thus the name ZFNs, zinc finger nuclease's. Sangamo has been working on refining this ZFN technique for a couple of decades now, and suddenly they're starting to make it work! Quite exciting stuff really, that could indeed change modern medicine.
Cured should be read more....it's a fine book, clearly written; difficult science explained in a clean, clear easy to understand way. An important book, highly recommended!

Great Book for science students or anyone who is interested

This is actually my first amazon review, this book is so good that I decided to write my first (I am only 1/3 into the book). As a science student, I am able to understand most of what Dr. Holt is talking about. She presented the history and anecdotes in a casual story-telling manner. For layman who has no background knowledge in biology, she added illustrations and tried to use analogy to explain the biological mechanism.

This is a great book for anyone who wants to understand the history and science of HIV/AIDS.

Kudos for Dr. Holt

This book is so well written that I felt compelled to read it in 48 hours.
The book is clear and concise, and perfectly understandable to the layman.
I have been reading on this topic daily and this is the first I heard of the "berlin patient", cured by early intervention.
Nathalia brings each patient to life and shows how hard this disease makes their lives.
Hats off to all the scientists and doctors mentioned.

In June of 1959, 12-year old Lynne Harper was found raped and strangled in a farm woodlot near Clinton, Ontario. A few months later her classmate, 14-year old Steven Truscott, was convicted of the murder. He was sentenced to death by hanging.

Truscott always maintained his innocence. As the youngest person ever sentenced to death in Canada, his case was a major impetus for the abolishment of capital punishment in this country, and his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment in 1960. In 2007, after a review of more than 250 pieces of new evidence, the Ontario Court of Appeal ruled that TruscottÕs conviction had been a miscarriage of justice, and he was acquitted.

In this incisive and emotionally-taut dramatization of the case, Beverley Cooper recreates the world of Steven Truscott and his friends. Sarah, a young farm girl, is our guide to life bounded by small town hangouts, organized sports, the local air force base, school. And then suddenly that world twists into a nightmare of grief, fear, police questioning, rumour and innuendo. The Church Could Use More Books Like This

I have the good fortune of knowing the authors and some of the other people that stand behind both the content and the lived-out reality of the text. I titled this post "The Church Could Use More Books Like This," for 3 reasons.

1) This book isn't theory, it emerges from decades of experience and reflection. And not just any experience, but experience in the trenches of Post-Christian Britain. It's not a perfect symmetry, but in many ways, the United States is following quick on the cultural heels of Western Europe and we would do well to pay careful attention to the insights of our brothers and sisters who are seeking to live into the reality of God's Kingdom in that context.

2) The focus of this book is something that a great many of us should be embarrassed is not more central to our ecclesiologies, discipleship. For far too long, discipleship has been seen as an add-on to the life of our churches. The assumption of these authors, however, is that churches actually only exist for one single purpose, to make disciples of Jesus. They'll come right out and tell you that their way isn't the only way to go about it, but they are unrelenting in their assertion that creating a discipling culture is imperative to a healthy identity and life for local congregations.

3) The final reason the Church needs more books like this is because it will provoke important questions. Vested readers are sure to find their margins filled with marks and notes. The assumptions and conclusions in this book emerge from a theological perspective which, though not fully unpacked here, will undoubtedly result in readers discovering that they may need to rethink some of their own perspectives and paradigms in order to really receive what the authors are saying and doing. For those who just want to extract a model and language to use in the context of another "church program," I suppose that's possible, but it would be an exercise in missing the point.

This is a great book that it written in such a way that it is accessible to any and all who are interested in thinking through what it might mean and look like for their church to build a discipling culture.

A good book on discipling yourself with some odd shapes thrown in

As a book on personal discipleship, that is reflecting on how I worship, pray, and work in God's kingdom around me, Building a Discipling Culture is excellent. The author has some unique and Bible-based insight around all parts of how we relate to God and the world around us. I especially liked his section on prayer that for the first time, for me anyway, really took the Lord's prayer and used it as a structure for daily prayer. It seemed to address how God would have us a pray much more completely then, say, the ACTS approach.

The other breakthrough I had with this book was personal gifts. Mr. Cockram presents the five gifts of Apostle, Pastor, Teacher, Prophet, and Evangelists. His concept that we have a dominant one but use all of them seems much more on-target than so many presentations on gifts. It is also interesting how he separates Pastor and Teacher. The explanation goes a long way in showing how we can all be pastors while most "pastors" are probably primarily teachers.

As a book about alternative ways to approach church, something I know it is used for, I found it a bit odd. The whole shapes approach is interesting but seems to create a new "secret language" of worship. Now instead of a "bullwark never failing" and various other churchy references, we can talk about the hexagon, circle, or various charts. The gifts, for example, are the five-fold ministries, the pentagon. He even goes so far as to say "this language should be the DNA....shared by you and the people you are discipling". I found it all too intentionally cryptic and think there is too much "secret, special" words we use amongst ourselves. Jesus didn't seem to do that (in fact, I don't even think he spoke in Greek which makes me wonder how all of his Aramaic words are better understood in Greek).

I think if Mr. Cockram had stuck with his core approach, personal discipleship, he would have produced a much more useful book. One final note. The test on personal gifts at the end is very good and is on the cusp of providing some very unique insight. But, unfortunately, it isn't explained how to interpret the results. I think that is a shame.

A new paradigm, not just another program

I've been a small group and discipleship pastor for nearly ten years now, and in that time I've seen lots of different theories and resources for how to develop discipleship systems. I've led the groups ministry for a large mega-church, for a small church plant, and I've listened to, coached and counseled churches of every size in between. In all my experience it is rare to find someone who's not just talking about a new process or program but a whole new paradigm on discipleship. This is what Mike Breen and the folks from 3DM are offering. These aren't just theories or abstract ideas; this is a book borne from the labor of leaders on the front lines working with one burning passion - to create growing disciples of Jesus Christ.

One caution: do not read this book as you might all the other small groups or discipleship resources out there. Do not go looking for the next "how to" book on creating a new program or system. You may even read this book and think, "So what. That seems too simple." But do not let the simplicity of the ideas obscure its power. Read the book, reflect on its ideas, and if you are stirred by the concepts presented, I suggest you find someone already implementing these ideas in their church and learn from them. You cannot put new wine in old wineskins, and you won't be able to apply many of the principles in this book without letting go of some of your existing paradigms. Seek out someone who can help you with that journey. We've greatly benefited from the learning of others who have walked this road ahead of us.
