Rossella Rago is the host of the popular web cooking show Cooking With Nonna (www.cookingwithnonna.com). On the show, Rossella invites an Italian-American nonna to cook with her, sharing traditional Italian recipes and fond memories of childhoods in Italy. Rossella has traveled the country and performed cooking demonstrations in many cities across the United States with local nonnas as her partners.

In 2010, Rossella, together with her mother and her Nonna Romana, participated in the "Italiano Battle" episode of the Food Network's 24 Hour Restaurant Battle; Team Nonna won. This book is not a traditional "textbook" and may have disappointed some reviewers. The book is a collection of chapters written by different experts that each focus on a field or sub-discipline of Biomaterials.

The first ~1/3 of the book can be used for a traditional Biomaterials course with the remaining chapters used for parts of follow-on electives or as starting points for class research projects.

We all loved them. Not only did it make it more ...

A little background. I used to visit Fightingarts. com, where Mark "Oldman" was also a member. As you can imagine, trying to explain bunkai in text can be a bit challenging. Mark started to use drawings to get his point across. We all loved them. Not only did it make it more clear what he was trying to say, but his interpretations also made sense. Many people said, "hey, you need to write a book".

As soon as I saw Oldman had written his book, I ordered it. It is one of the best books I've 'read' on bunkai. Not only does it clearly show the bunkai, but does so in a humorous manner. I've started giving the book to students as a workbook. We do kata and bunkai, and use this as a guide. What I really like is the "notes" pages, which allows us to add our own thoughts or ideas about the kata. Kids love it because of the pictures; it's easy to follow and understand.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who practices these kata.

Fun, Practical Illustrations

There are two reasons why I like this book so much.

1. Hilarious Illustrations - It seems almost every other martial arts book out there has pictures showing what a would-be attacker and a would-be defender could be doing in any given scenario. As it well should. It's much more effective - for me, at least - to see how a self-defense maneuver goes from step A to step B to step C, rather than read descriptive text. Mr. Cook offers pictures, but they're his own unique illustrations. First he demonstrates the individual movements of the kata, and then he shows what total to be dozens of applications from the moves in each of the five katas.

2. Oldman Wants to Avoid Confrontation - Though it's not called out anywhere, Oldman is seen a number of times in each illustration with his hands up, as if he's saying he doesn't want to fight. Most martial arts books only focus on the technique itself, and not what led up to the technique. This book is a bit different, as it shows that Oldman is trying to get out before things get bad. (Spoiler alert: things always get bad in this book, and Oldman always wins.) Even if it's not explicitly mentioned, I love that this aspect of the dilemma is included.

I got this book already knowing the Pinan series of Kata...but the way Mr. Cook presents the material is truly one-of-a-kind and creative...it allows me to learn a few things I had never thought in a way that is easy to understand and fun to look at! I believe anyone could learn the series of kata as a basic teaching tool here and enjoy the ride!

The great skeptic and prose stylist H.L. Mencken had a lifelong habit of keeping notebooks that he'd plumb for ideas. He eventually collected many brief essays from his notebooks and published them as Minority Report, claiming in the book's introduction that the pieces had been selected at random. That may be true, but as Mencken's writing discipline seemed to require him to always produce elegant prose, it's fair to say that his random notebook entries are superior to the polished essays of many other writers. Mencken was simply a national treasure, and Minority Report, as it contains a great many of his observations on a wide variety of subjects, is a good place to begin to get a taste of his eccentrically intelligent style.

Excellent HLM, Just A Bit Mean Here & There!

This selection of HLM aphorisms appeared in his later years at the age of 68, just before his health seriously deteriorated. Basically a book of about 432 short witticisms, much like A. Bierce's DEVIL'S DICTIONARY, but with a bit too much bile a times. Obviously, he enjoys jabbing at the powerful ("Roosevelt II", among others), the New Deal, Lawyers, Politicians, Professors, just about everyone, or, all the hippocrites, idiots,morons,(standard words in the HLM lexicon) out there. Politically he seems to subscribe to the hard Victorian "Sink or Swim" philosophy, and constantly cracks those who cannot pull their own weight. Democracy? A sham for losers and loafers. Elections? Only those who have supported themselves for 5 years need apply. Mississippians and Tenneseeans? Mainly dim wits and holy rollers of inferior stock. Some of these comments get repetitive, and more than a little tasteless. But,still, at his best, he is incomparable, especially in critiqueing organized (mainly Christian) religion. In his view a total sham, completely irrational and unscientific. In fact, the world would be vastly improved if everyone took a few moments to consider his irreverent, but totally honest, religion comments.Wars? Completely without morals and really a suckers game run by incompetents with no knowledge of the horrors being unleached. So today HLM would be a far right libertarian, but would shoot his poisonous darts to all the war mongerers and phoney flag wavers. So where is today's HLM? There are a few who try, but none who can come close!

About the Author
Edwin Gentzler is Director of the Translation Center and Associate Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is co-editor (with Maria Tymoczko) of Translation and Power (Amherst: University of Massachusetts Press, forthcoming) and author of numerous articles on translation theory and practice. He serves as co-editor (with Susan Bassnett) of the Topics in Translation Series for Multilingual Matters and is on the editorial board of several journals, including Metamorphoses (Amherst/Northampton), Across (Hungary), and Cadernos de Tradução (Brazil).

Like Land of the Living [BKL Mr 15 03], this one focuses on a London-dwelling protagonist who must prove a point to disbelieving family, friends, and police. Miranda is dating a charmer named Brendan until she discovers him reading her diary and kicks him out. Dumped by Miranda, Brendan woos and wins her sister, Kerry. Gradually Miranda realizes he's more than just sleazy--he's sick. But her family and friends only see the charming face he shows them and believe that Miranda is the one who was dumped and won't let go. When a member of her family dies, Miranda feels that Brendan must be involved. But can she prove it before he kills her? In typical French fashion, the surprise ending will leave readers shaking their heads and grinning. Another not-to-be-missed adventure from a consistently satisfying author. Jenny McLarin

Sociopathy 1A

Every woman should be educated on how sociopaths operate. They, according to THE MASK OF SANITY, can fool anyone including psychiatrists, forensic analysts and in this novel even the police. Who should ABSOLUTELY KNOW BETTER. For you who have daughters I recommend you educate yourself and then educate them. Poor Miranda, NO ONE believed her! I knew almost from the first descriptive sentence that he was evil. How easily we are fooled! Aside from these comments I felt this was a good read and was completely blindsided with the ending! I gave this four stars because I couldn't believe how stupid the police presence was.
Addendum: I just found what looks like a very helpful book in addition to THE MASK OF SANITY. THE SOCIOPATH NEXT DOOR by Martha Stout. Available here at Amazon.

NOT HER BEST WORK

I LOVE HER STYLE OF WRITING, I HAVE READ EVERYTHING SHE HAS WRITTEN. THIS IS DEFINATELY HER WORST BOOK. THERE WERE SO MANY THINGS ABOUT THE PLOT THAT WERE JUST PLAIN STUPID. IT WAS LIKE SOMETHING FROM JERRY SPRINGER. THREE WOMAN WHO ARE CLOSE TO EACH OTHER ALL GO OUT WITH THE SAME GUY. TWO OF THEM AGREE TO MARRY THIS GUY IN A MATTER OF WEEKS. THEN THE MAIN CHARACTER MIRANDA GETS TALKED INTO LETTING THIS PSYCHO MOVE IN WITH HER. WHEN THINGS GET REALLY BAD SHE DOESN'T EVEN TELL THEM TO MOVE OUT SHE IS THE ONE THAT MOVES. OK SO SHE FINALLY GETS THIS GUY OUT OF HER LIFE AND WHAT DOES SHE DO. TRACKS HIM DOWN AND PULLS HIM BACK INTO HER LIFE!! THEN THERE IS AN INCIDENT IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM WHERE THE POLICE LET THE LAWYER OF THE ACCUSED INTO HER CUBICLE TO YELL AT HER ABOUT WHAT A LIAR SHE IS. THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN. IT GOES ON AND ON. ALMOST EVERYTHING ABOUT THE PLOT IS RIDICULOUS. IF YOU WANT TO READ A REALLY GOOD BOOK BY HER GET "KILLING ME SOFTLY". I WOULDN'T BOTHER TO READ THIS ONE.

Creepy Fun

This was a super creepy page turner. I was hooked from the first sentence. French knows how to build suspense and keep you engaged throughout. I have to say, though, that this novel didn't really stay with me after I finished it. It's a great airplane book or vacation book, but it doesn't have the depth of her Frieda Klein books. If you're looking for a fun thriller, though, this is it.
