About the Author

Hans-Bernd Kittlaus:

Graduate of University of Dortmund (Diplom-Informatiker). Spent 12 years with IBM, first in the Boeblingen Development Lab in technical and management positions, then as the head of EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) Software Product Management for IBM's database and application development products in Stuttgart (Germany), San Jose (California, USA) and Toronto (Canada). Spent 6 years as Director with SIZ (Informatics Center of the German Savings Banks Organization). Started his own consulting company InnoTivum, Rheinbreitbach, Germany, in 2001 focussing on all strategy and management topics in relation to software, in particular the alignment of business and IT. Mr. Kittlaus has published numerous articles and the books ‚Data Mining’ (Addison Wesley, 1998), ‘Business Process Reengineering und Produktivitätssteigerungsprogramm’ (Deutscher Sparkassen Verlag, 1999) und ’Database Marketing’ (Deutscher Sparkassen Verlag, 2001). He was co-author of the book ’Software-Produkt-Management’ (Kittlaus/Rau/Schulz, Springer, 2004). Since 2005 he is member of the board of the German software company Sander & Doll.

Peter N. Clough:

Graduate of Trinity School (NYC) and Columbia University (BA in French Literature). Prior to joining IBM, two years spent on Wall Street as programmer and systems analyst. Employee of IBM since 1970, with experience in marketing and sales, finance, and business terms. Experienced in several industry sectors, especially Finance. Responsibilities have included both hardware and software marketing and sales as well as developing terms and conditions and pricing for all types of software within IBM. Influenced, participated in or managed every major IBM software terms development since 1983. Fourteen years in Europe Middle East Africa Division of IBM, split between working in US and in Paris. More recently, developed the offerings and price models for enterprise software sales in IBM’s Software Group, and led or structured sales, and provided deal negotiation assistance worldwide. Currently Enterprise Software Sales Executive and Manager of SW Offerings in IBM’s Software Group. In this role led, structured, or assisted in WW software sales to large customers, generally in the 50 to 500M category. Oversight of IBM software offerings worldwide and architect and author of the pricing structure for IBM’s major software relationship offering, the Enterprise Software and Services Offering. Winner of multiple IBM awards including the IBM Chairman’s Award in May 2000 for work done on software enterprise offerings and the Golden Circle in 2006 for sales contributions.

Good coverage but lacks real life examples

I like the compact form factor (200+ pages), easy writing style and good command of English (you won't find words like "gotten"). On the flip side only 1 of the 5 chapters is devoted to pricing (theory) and lacks real life pricing models as examples. There are two examples but not enough to give a product manager a feel for different pricing models for software. The remaining 4 chapters flow easily but spend too much time (in my opinion) on things like mainframes, SaaS, Gartner models when that coverage could have been better spent on sample MRDs, PRDs, methods for requirements gathering and activities that a real life product manager would have to do. The pricing chapter could have been vastly improved with some real life pricing models of how software is priced by the likes of IBM, Microsoft, VMware and cover things like pricing by processor, core, platform, usage, capacity etc...If the authors plan a 2nd rev I hope they take this into consideration.

Product Manager and pricing done right

After 20 years as software Product Manager in the US and in Europe I find it wonderful that there is finally a book that brings structure and reason to this often chaotic profession. The book provides a very knowledgeable in-depth analysis of the current state of the software business, detailed descriptions of all the tasks of a software product manager, and those of a pricer, and it has lots of real-world examples from companies like Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, IBM and many others. If you are just starting to work as a software product manager or pricer, you will find a lot of value in the frameworks for both software product management and pricing. The frameworks show the full spectrum of these professions on just one page. If you are an experienced professional, there is a lot of methodological advice, a crisp perspective obviously derived from a wealth of experience in the software industry, plus a very comprehensive bibliography.
The authors manage to look at their subjects not only from the perspective of a software vendor, but also describe how this can be applied to corporate IT organizations in all industries. I am not aware of any other book that covers these subjects to a comparable extent. In fact I do not think that there are many other publications on software pricing since I know that the major software companies consider pricing as highly confidential, and do not allow their pricing managers to publish. If you are interested in software product management and pricing, you have to get this book. You will find it to be a greatly valued reference that you will go back to again and again and again and even if you do not intend to establish yourself as a software product manager or pricer in your company. In this book you will also learn how software vendors think and act - great knowledge before negotating with any of them.

About the Author
Charles D. Linn, FAIA, is an architect who has specialized in architectural journalism for nearly 30 years. He worked for McGraw-Hill Construction between 1991 and 2010. While there he was a senior editor at Architectural Record magazine, and a consulting editor for GreenSource
magazine, and was the leader of Architectural Record's Innovation Conference. Currently he is the director of communications for the University of Kansas School of Architecture, Design, and Planning. He has won numerous awards for editorial excellence, and was selected for the
AIA's College of Fellows in 2002. He is licensed to practice architecture in several states, and earned his Bachelor of Architecture from Kansas State University.

Russell Fortmeyer is a design journalist, electrical engineer, and sustainable technology specialist with the Los Angeles office of the global engineering firm, Arup. He is a member of the applied studies faculty at the Southern California Institute of Architecture and lectures in several architecture schools. His writing has appeared in Architectural Record, Architectural Review Asia Pacific, and Contract, among many other publications. His design work includes the Seattle Public Library, Ronald Reagan Medical Center in Los Angeles, 8 Chifley Square in Sydney, and the master plan for the COFCO Beijing Agricultural Eco-Valley. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Architectural Engineering from Kansas State University and Master's in Architecture from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Inspiration for your next project

Aside from the beautiful images and insightful text (which almost goes without saying since the authors are former editors of Architectural Record), the material is placed in theoretical and historic contexts, providing remarkably refreshing perspectives. Design strategies gleaned from the numerous case studies will trigger ideas for addressing building performance and creating striking architecture responsive to a specific set of circumstances.

The book appropriately concludes with an essay on research and development. It is exciting to have a glimpse of the facades of the future, which are being (and will be) developed by the collaborative work of academics, professionals, and manufacturers.

The seminal active facades reference book for architects, engineers and consultants

The front cover of "Kinetic Architecture: Designs for Active Envelopes" is intriguing: is it part of an alien spacecraft, an insect carapace or giant origami? Actually, it is a close up of a sophisticated shading system for the Abu Dhabi Investment Council Headquarters by Aedas. The cover, like most images in the book, is striking. Apparently, inspiration for the shading system was drawn from traditional shading screens, called mashrabiyas. These mashrabiyas open and close independently, to minimise solar heat gain as the sun moves across the building. In summer, Abu Dhabi is beyond hot with temperatures of 45c, in winter temperatures drop to 12c.

I tell my students to be wary of buildings that shape shift, for such slight of hand often masks an absence of deep thinking about design. So just how important are active building envelopes in architecture today? Well, in his foreword, renowned architect Christoph Ingenhoven considers the building envelope to be a third skin, having to act as protectively our own skin and to be as adaptable as our clothing. “The skin is the most versatile organ of the human organism” he writes “I want my facades to be just as adaptable and active.”

Just what he means is explained inside, with a case study of 1 Bligh Street, a remarkable office tower in downtown Sydney. The developers wanted the building, by Architectus + Ingenhoven, to be the first sustainable high-rise in Australia, and to use the most advanced environmental systems. The building's passive double-wall façade, which consists of insulating inner glass and single glazed outer glass and aerodynamic louvres, is set out in diagrams and plans, and gorgeous photos in an entire chapter which is devoted to the building. Full chapter case studies of 22 other buildings from around the world make up the rest of the book.

For the authors Russell Fortmeyer and Charles D. Linn however, this book is not about buildings that move or clever facade design. It is about energy. The authors declare their motivation openly in saying, “we are interested in the envelope and innovative ways [facades] can be used to modulate energy in its primary forms.” In this, they succeed, as the book explores in a comprehensive and rigorous manner how contemporary architects have reacted to escalating international concern over the use of natural resources and climate change by modulating their designs to consume less energy, perform better and respond to site context.

The book has two sections, the first is a well written essay by Charles D. Linn which considers the history and development of the glass facade in architecture, using few important precedents like the 16th Century Hardwick Hall by Robert Smythson, Paxton’s greenhouse at Chatsworth and the Steif Toy Factory in Germany, all supported by expert analysis. Linn is an architect and until recently, a deputy editor at Architectural Record. His writing is accessible, jargon free, and a pleasure to read.

His coauthor, journalist and engineer Russell Fortmeyer, also writes succinctly. His essay “Tugendhat House – Passive Mies to Active Mies” is included as “one of the earliest examples of a dynamic façade used to mediate environmental conditions” The coverage is completely original, enlightening, comprehensive, and the photography excellent.

Yet this is not, as Linn points out, a book about history or theory. “We have written case studies of projects with active facades that react to exterior conditions for both energy savings and maintaining human comfort. These are from all over the world, many have not been documented outside their respective countries.”

These exemplary projects are set out clearly in the case study chapters. The best offer stunning photography of environmentally exceptional buildings but also clear detail of how the buildings perform to reduce energy.

For example, the California Academy of Science by Renzo Piano is visually striking and its sustainable credentials are explained and supported by working drawings, sections and diagrams. So too is Unilever Haus in Hamburg by Behnisch Architekten. This building uses an outer layer of synthetic polymer as a low cost method of achieving a double skin system to improve energy performance and to create a building which has “re-energised the city’s waterfront.”

The most interesting project from Australia is the Surry Hills Library and Community Centre by Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp. A small, public building it has exceptional detail and environmental credentials, with two very different facades, in response to site context and orientation. One has vertical timber louvres which react to the position of the sun and minimise solar gain inside. Away from direct sunlight, a double-skinned glass façade over four storeys, encloses an “environmental atrium” which pulls air in from the roof, filters it through bamboo plants and into a gabion wall in the basement, which cools the air.

Kinetic Architecture is, as the authors intended, a valuable resource for architects, engineers and students. It is clearly written, accessible and the photography is exceptional. An entertaining and pleasurable book for the professional and those generally interested in architecture and in the environment.

About the Author

Passionate about reaching people for Christ, Garry and his team have trained thousands of leaders to launch seeker small groups in their own settings. His award-winning book, Seeker Small Groups, provides a detailed blueprint for facilitating small group discussions that assist spiritual seekers with investigating Christianity. He also wrote The Complete Book of Questions, a collection of 1001 conversation starters and numerous group study guides including The Three Habits of Highly Contagious Christians; The Tough Questions Series, and Experiencing the Passion of Jesus (with Lee Strobel) to accompany Mel Gibson’s film, The Passion of the Christ. Complete Book of Questions

If I can't come up with a question around the dinner or get myself to talk to people, this book is great for making new friends, bonding with family members or meeting new in-laws for the first time, even for a romantic one on one date with a guy or girl- friend or married person. The questions goes from light to serious questions so it's best to follow the order, no complaints on this book!!!

About the Author

Dieter Schmalstieg is professor and head of the Institute for Computer Graphics and Vision at Graz University of Technology (TUG), Austria. His current research interests are augmented reality, virtual reality, real-time graphics, 3D user interfaces, and visualization. He received Dipl.-Ing. (1993), Dr. techn. (1997) and Habilitation (2001) degrees from Vienna University of Technology. He is author and coauthor of more than two hundred peer-reviewed scientific publications, associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, member of the editorial advisory board of computers and graphics and of Springer Virtual Reality, member of the steering committee of the IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality, chair of the EUROGRAPHICS working group on Virtual Environments (1999-2010), advisor of the K-Plus Competence Center for Virtual Reality and Visualization in Vienna, and member of the Austrian Academy of Science. In 2002, he received the START career award presented by the Austrian Science Fund. In 2012, he received the IEEE Virtual Reality Technical Achievement Award for seminal contributions to the field of augmented reality. Since 2008, he is also director of the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Handheld Augmented Reality.

 

Tobias Höllerer is professor of computer science at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he leads the Four Eyes Laboratory, conducting research in the four I's of Imaging, Interaction, and Innovative Interfaces. Dr. Höllerer holds a Diplom in informatics from the Technical University of Berlin, as well as an M.S. and Ph.D. in computer science from Columbia University. He is a recipient of the U.S. National Science Foundation's CAREER award for his work on "Anywhere Augmentation." enabling mobile computer users to place annotations in 3D space wherever they go. In 2013, he was named an ACM Distinguished Scientist. Dr. Höllerer is author of more than one hundred fifty peer-reviewed journal and conference publications in the areas of augmented and virtual reality, information visualization, 3D displays and interaction, mobile and wearable computing, and social computing. Several of these publications have been selected for best paper or honorable mention awards at such venues as the IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality (ISMAR), IEEE Virtual Reality (VR), ACM Virtual Reality Software and Technology, ACM User Interface Software and Technology, ACM MobileHCI, IEEE SocialCom, and IEEE CogSIMA. Dr. Höllerer is an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics. Among his many organizational roles for scientific conferences he served as program chair for IEEE VR 2015, ICAT 2013, IEEE ISMAR 2010 and 2009; as general chair of IEEE ISMAR 2006; and as member of the steering committee of IEEE ISMAR.

Just what I was looking for!

People who order this product do need to understand that it is a definitive and very thorough book on Young Living Essential Oils only. This is exactly what I intended to order, and am very pleased with the packaging, speed of shipping (very fast), the condition of the book (shrink wrapped and mint condition), and the quality of the product itself. The book is hard cover and spiral bound so that it lays flat and is convenient to use because of that. The pages are high quality glossy paper, with many full color prints and informative diagrams. There are also many convenient quick reference charts which cut to the chase if I am in a hurry. The whole book is color coded for convenient use as the colors show on the page edges when the book is closed. This Essential Oils Desk Reference 6th Edition far surpasses my own expectations, even though I had had the book described to me many times. It is very thorough and extremely well written and well documented. In the back of the book, there are several appendices-so helpful, a bibliography, and an exhaustive index. I had been confused by the difference in reviews, as to whether this was the desk reference or the pocket reference. This is a full size desk reference: a bit larger than 9 x 11 inches, and has 810 pages. I am very pleased.

FYI ~ It seems a few who have left comments here are mistaking this as the pocket reference edition . This is in fact the DESKTOP Edition and is much larger. and goes into much more depth . I thought this might take away any confusion arising from such comments.

Overrated

I ordered this book along with a book on Sashiko by Susan Briscoe. This book cost 3 X the price of Sashiko and that would have been okay, however, I could not help but compare the size of the pictures - this book is small and while the pictures are wonderful they are SMALL. The pictures although few of actual boro pieces in the Sashiko book were LARGE and also lovely. Plus, lots of information on the history of running stitches in Japan and tutorials on HOW as opposed to the one liners in this book. The concept of this book is in itself lovely, just a bit too stingy for my taste especially after comparing the two. Even if all I was looking for was inspiration - still, the pictures were too stingy. Might be best to order this book by itself so as not to compare it with another much better book in my opinion.

Private Room is a series of images of eight women that fashion photographer Pamela Hanson photographed between 2012 and 2014 in a small hotel on the Bowery in New York City. Beginning with her portraits of Camille Rowe in 2012, the photographs in Private Room progressed into a series of nudes and seminudes, which Hanson quickly decided to develop into a book.
Hanson was inspired by the interiors of the Lafayette House, a brownstone built in the 19th century that is a place of forgotten beauty, with walls lined in gold-leafed wallpaper--charming, sexy, romantic and private. Its intimate environment elucidates the character of each subject, in a celebration of female beauty and confidence. Hanson collaborated with stylist Susan Winget on these images, casting each woman together. Edition of 1,000 copies.

About the Author
With over 20 years of experience in the fashion industry, Pamela Hanson is a world-renowned photographer whose work has been regularly featured in Porter, Vogue, Vanity Fair and numerous ad campaigns. Her photographs reflect contemporary life as seen through the eyes of free-spirited, funloving and fashionable young men and women. Hanson began her career as an assistant to Arthur Elgort. Previous books include Girls (2001) and Boys (2006). She grew up in Geneva, spent 20 years in Paris, and now lives in New York City.
