The first graphic novel in the Carnal series, Pride of the Lions takes place on the continent of New Africa and focuses on three main species of humanistic animals. After the Great War decades earlier between the hyenas and the lions, the victorious and once united lion prides now lay scattered across the land, torn by civil unrest over territory disputes and food shortages. The hyena clans that survived the war were forced deep into the Earth and now live in a massive underground city under the control of a terrible witch. The buffalo race is indifferent to most other species and have walled themselves off from the rest of the kingdoms. Humans have lost their hold on the African territories long ago and live as a simple, nomadic species. The first book opens with Long Eyes, an old sapphire-eyed lion who is determined to save the lion kingdom and rescue his warrior son, Oron, who has gone missing. Long Eyes believes Oron is the key to uniting the prides. A young lioness tracker named Omi is sent out with the protection of two lion brothers to locate the missing warrior, but what they find is something that may unravel the very foundation of life for all species.

John Connell has created a masterpiece. Moreover, he has created something new and exciting in the world of graphic novels. A rich and engrossing story coupled with lush illustrations, Carnal: Pride of the Lions is a well-oiled machine that feeds on readers emotions. It will leave you angry, teary-eyed, with knots in your stomach, and if you can get past all of those emotions and reach the final page, I guarantee it will leave you well satisfied and thirsty for more. What is Carnal exactly? Think of a cross between Planet of the Apes and Thundercats. It's what you get when intelligent animals rule the world.

In Connell's world, humans are the bottom of the food chain. Because of their greed, bloodlust, and their constant need for technological advancement (or magic), the world slowly began to unravel. Humans gave birth to animals that now have the ability to walk upright, talk, think as humans, and gain immense power. Animals currently rule the lands with an iron fist, driving humans to the brink of extension, back to a place where they are simple nomads fighting for their chance to survive. We have all heard these stories before, that technology will become our downfall. Yet if we were to think of it as what Connell has described in his graphic novel, I would suspect none of us are ready.

The story takes place in the vast Serengeti of Africa. A land once sacred to all mankind but has fallen into a constant state of unrest because of a growing rivalry between the three evolved dominant species of buffaloes, lions, and hyenas each with their own hidden agenda. After losing the Great War to the lions, hyenas have become cunning, ruthless creatures determined to wreak havoc on the mighty warriors who have sentenced them to a life below ground. And unbeknownst to the animals around them, the balance of power may soon shift in their favor.

Our main character is Oron. He is depicted as a `God like" lion, a savior of sorts, with unmatched strength, incredible height, and whose voice "thundered as deep as war drums". Oron was sent by the tribal leader Long Eyes, along with two of his pride sister hunters, to find food for the pack in the forbidden hyena territory. Days go by without a word from Oron or the lionesses. Even worse, a mysterious old lion travels to the tribe and describes something deeply disturbing that happens to Oron and his pride sisters. Because of this, Long Eyes has to make a dangerous decision that will go on to affect his tribe for generations to come. And without giving too much of the plot away, I must say that the story of Oron will take a sharp turn that readers will never see coming.

Not only do we get the story of Oron, but we are also introduced to well developed side character complete with unique and fascinating histories. One of my favorites is Omi, a skilled tracker who found the tribe out of sheer luck with her mother when she was only just a cub. Although she has grown and developed into a beautiful yet deadly warrior, she is still searching for her place among the other female lions. Throughout the story her abilities will be tested and her fate soon becomes tied to Oron's.

Overall Carnal: Pride of the Lions is a phenomenal well-rounded graphic novel that completely blew me away. It was a delight to read and thanks to the wonderful folks at Sea Lion I now have a new author to place among my other favorites such as Alan Robert. The artwork is ingenious. It's like a gorgeous painting that enhances and adds depth to the story. If you are looking for a something new to sink your teeth into next year, I highly recommend this unforgettable story.

Absolutely WOW! I fell in love with the book cover first because the graphics are so alluring but the story far exceeds in brilliance and creativity in this tribal quest for survival novel. The god like fierce and massive warriors will captivate you immediately at every turn of the page. Each chapter is enhanced with a visual graphic that tells the story on its own and only intensifies the already imaginative vision you have created in your mind from the author's smooth writing.

In this story you will be memorized with the details of how a world evolved from a world of humans to a world where the destruction from the evil magic has integrated into the animal races leaving the humans scarce and the last remaining three tribal beasts, the Lions, the Hyenas, and the Buffalo to rein the lands.

Even after the Great War and a semi-peace truce which divided the African land between the species, the wicked witch still controls the Hyenas from underground with her evil magic and seeks the ultimate goal of destruction and control against the Lions and the Buffalo by stopping their main supply of food source. However, the Lion's and the Buffalo are a lot smarter and fiercer than the Hyenas bargained for.

The story is full of action, bravery, loyalty, jealousy, pride, and drama that will have you begging for more in the end. I seriously did not want this book to end especially after the cliff hanger with fierce warrior "Oron" and cannot wait for the next book to come out in this series.

Very Similar to previous book

If you have the previous book in the series, CS6, it is very similar. It goes over a few new techniques such as rotoscoping. It is not a purely step by step book. You will need some know how with After Effects. It really delves into a smattering of different "special effects" and how to incorporate them. It is for people who want to add to the basics of after effects and really get into some cool things you can do. It is not overly simple, but the author is very clear and concise. You may get lost and have to redo a couple things, but it is a logic step for beginners wanting to get better at fundamental effects. Do not start with this book if you are a complete beginner. Try CC classroom in a book first.

Now the really bad.....

The Kindle edition does not have a download code in the back of the book for the lesson files. I have contacted Peachpit, but they keep saying it is in the back of the book. They are not. I have used plenty of Kindle books with Peachpit download codes and none exist in this book. I did find the previous book's (CS6) download files after searching online for a while, but I believe they may differ a bit from this new one.

Until I can get the download files the book is only somewhat helpful. I would normally give it 4 stars, but they gave me an incomplete product. When they do I will revise my review.

EDIT-

They acknowledged the missing download codes finally and sent them to me. They also stated the Kindle version would be updated.

The book is worth-while if you don't have the previous version. I don't think there is enough different to warrant a successive purchase. Just look up the changes online to rotoscoping, etc. If you don't have the previous version or AE is still a bit new to you, then it is worthwhile.

Excellent book but NOT for beginners

The author of this book certainly knows his stuff. But a word of caution to those who are new to After Effects: this book is NOT for you. The author even says so, right in the intro: "This is NOT a book for beginners...it's not an effective primer on After Effects in particular or digital video in general." So, I am not being critical of the book when I say this. I am merely trying to save you some dollars if you are just starting out in After Effects. You'll find a wealth of insight into how AE works in various production scenarios, and along the way you may pick up some tips that will be helpful, but if you are an AE newbie, stick to the Classroom In a Book series and get a year or two of solid AE work under your belt, then maybe come back to this one.

Mark packs a lot of great information into this book

Mark packs a lot of great information into this book. I have the CS6 version of this book, and bought this hoping to find new information that applies to the Creative Cloud version of AE. I haven't found anything that indicates what is new since the CS6 version, but I'm sure there are nuggets of info awaiting discovery. The CS6 version included footage and other files that have to be downloaded for anyone who purchases this edition of the book. Consequently, I feel the CS6 book is a better value, and thus I can only give this book 4 out of 5 stars. Regardless, I highly recommend this book as a resource and training guide for anyone who wishes to do compositing and VFX work with the Creative Cloud version of After Effects.

About the Author
Graham Scarr is a chartered biologist and osteopath with a particular interest in structural mechanics. Fascinated by the numerous examples of geometric patterns and shapes in nature, he has been researching their significance over many years. As a graduate in microbiology, and after spending several years developing his skills in a bacteriological research lab, he is now part of a specific interest group looking at the significance of the biotensegrity concept to biomechanics and clinical practice, and at the forefront of current thinking about this subject. Working closely with Stephen Levin, an orthopaedic surgeon who first recognized the importance of biotensegrity to living organisms, he has developed new models that progress our understanding of the structure-function relationship in biology. Graham Scarr is currently a Fellow of the Linnean Society and Member of the Society of Biology; he has published several papers on this subject in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Excellent book on this increasingly-accepted theory of biologic structure

I have been following the scientific theory of biotensegrity for several years now and I am co-founder of the first BIG (Biotensegrity Interest Group) in the US.

Graham Scarr's is the first book ever on Dr. Stephen M. Levin's theory of tensegrity in biology -- "biotensegrity," and Dr. Levin wrote the forward, endorsing Scarr's work as an accurate presentation of his theory, which was first conceived by Levin in 1975, after a multi-year search for the architectural principles of biomechanics.

Essential for anyone who is looking for an accurate foundation in this emerging field of science, Scarr takes us through the fundamentals step-by-step, making a complex theory accessible without diluting it, and illuminating biotensegrity theory as that of the structure of the hierarchical, evolutionary and developmental continuum of biologic life, and not merely metaphor,

Endoskeletal tensegrity icosahedrons, the foundational seed structure of the biotensegrity model, have properties and behaviors that we are quite unused to, outside of nature, and the structural model was not available to us until Kenneth Snelson realized it in the middle of the last century. Because of this, structural biology has traditionally been built on machine models, an unexamined fundamental assumption which results in who-knows-how-many inaccurate and unrealistic conclusions, many of them medical. An example of this would be the billions of dollars spent annually in the US alone on spinal fusions, which are rationalized on the assumption that we are more stable when we our moving parts are _less_ mobile and flexible, like a building or a machine. Think of it: if that were true, as we age and stiffen and become less flexible we would become more stable and fall less--not exactly the case. Do you see the problem here?

I look forward to the day when this theory becomes understood on a more widespread basis, because all medical procedures which are founded on a machine model of the body (as opposed to the biotensegrity model) will have to be reviewed and, I expect, will be improved accordingly.

Scarr's book is concise and very well illustrated, with many models built by the author. You really have to build these things yourself, or at least get one in your hands to understand the almost shocking properties of tensegrity structures. Enjoyable and informative read

This book offers an excellent overview of Tensegrity as it applies to biological systems. It is very easy to digest, and has clarified some questions on the history of this subject, as well as gifted me with new insights as to how to apply the model to Manual Therapy.

The subject of BioTensegrity is not an easy concept to grasp

This book is the first on the topic of BioTensegrity. It therefore marks a historical development in our understanding of biomechanics. The subject of BioTensegrity is not an easy concept to grasp, that is, until one understands the fundamentals. At this stage there is a eureka moment where Levin’s BioTensegrity model becomes blaringly obvious having beautifully evolved.
While Scarr’s knowledge is formidable his pitch-perfect prose builds this text in true tensegrity style. There is oxygen in every sentence. Scarr has sculpted an easy to read, easily comprehensible book for everyone with an interest in living movement.

The importance of BioTensegrity in enhancing our knowledge of biological structures cannot be understated and cries out for critical investigation. For example, Scarr takes classical mechanics to task in chapter 4 with a convincing argument demonstrating that biology is not constrained by the laws of classical mechanics. Levin’s four bar closed chain kinematic explanation is poetry in motion. The time is ripe for a new vision and new explanation for the construct and movement ability of biological systems. A third class lever would be all that is required to catapult the long held laws of mechanics to a distant past when mankind did not appreciate that inanimate objects are not comparable to living organisms.

I suggest that this book is not one the reader will digest in one sitting. Smaller more digestable portions are recommended. Therein lies additional value in purchasing the book. I believe this historical text will become an important source of reference with the need to return to specific points or chapters time and again. As the readers knowledge of the topic grows a return for another read with fresh eyes and a more appreciable understanding will result in new interpretations of the material.

I am delighted to give this book my highest recommendation.
